The website was not working this morning when I checked. I believe the outage began around 11 PM EST Sunday night when the server was upgraded to PHP 5.3.9 by our webhosting company. I had requested the upgrade but had no control over when it might take place. I assumed PHP 5.3.9 would cause no problems because I use that version on my development machine.
As soon as I noticed the problem this morning I backed off to PHP 5.3.3, and the website seems to be working properly now.
Apologies for the inconvenience.

Re: Using other modules?
Hi Diomedes,
I'm not using any ancillary modules. I don't know when I'll have a chance to investigate the actual cause of the problem. We were at PHP 5.1 before, so I'm pretty happy at 5.3.3 - getting to 5.3.9 isn't a priority. I don't know if anyone else can tell, but to me the performance seems a bit snappier now, which is what I was hoping. The next dBoard release will have bigger performance demands, so upgrading to PHP 5.3+ was important.

To me the performance has been very slow for the past few weeks.
Given that the various machines I use to access the site (two desktop PCs, one laptop PC, one Macbook Pro) are all receiving very good performance right now, we might have to consider causes other than the server. If it's just this site that's slow for you, but this site is not slow for anyone else, then that's pretty mysterious and I would have no answers. But let's start with the obvious question first: how fast does your machine render this:
This is such a simple program that if it's not instantly then the server cannot be the cause.

The regular pages often take many seconds to load. I go to another website while I'm waiting.
Okay, let's try an experiment. Disable Javascript and then check if there's a positive impact on performance. If you're not sure how to disable Javascript then just let me know which browser you're using and I'll explain.

Re: Using other modules?
Hmmm, okay. Are all pages slow, or just some pages? For example, is the Rules link (top menu bar) as slow loading as a page of messages?
If they're both slow then I'm out of ideas.

Re: Using other modules?
There's only one more comparison that I think might be informative, though it wouldn't present a solution. ESPN: Serving sports fans. Anytime. Anywhere. is a site that loads relatively slowly because of the amount of content and Javascript initialization. Does a page of EvC messages load faster or slower? If slower then I have no explanation. If faster, maybe 2 or 3 times as fast, then that's pretty much what you should expect.
I just thought of another possible cause. If you're using a machine that isn't particularly robust in the image processing department, then EvC pages that have a lot of image scaling might load more slowly for you. Does this page:
Load much more slowly than this page:

Re: Using other modules?
Maybe we can find some common element between you and Ringo.
The one possible problem source that I'm excluding is the server itself. If some machines can render a page of EvC messages quickly, that means the server must be servicing the request quickly, and there's nothing that would cause the server to satisfy requests fast for some people and slow for others.
But maybe there's something about the environment. Can you both let me know the machine type, the operating system type and version, and the browser type and version.

Re: Using other modules?
Do you have other browsers available that you can try? It would be interesting to know if they're all equally as slow.

That's a good suggestion.
Ringo and JonF: There's a program called tracert (short for traceroute). Open up a cmd window and give the command "tracert evcforum.net". This will list all the hops between your machine and EvC Forum. The last line should have three times in the 100ms range (it sends three packets and measures the round-trip time for each one). If it's significantly larger than 100ms then post the whole trace so I can take a look.
