Re: No Jeers
A vote (cheer or jeer) could be about content, style, quality, position, entertainment value, etc., and there's no way to know.
Maybe there should be a row of jeer and cheer buttons. One set each for content, quality, position, etc. and maybe you could only vote for one attribute per post. It probably would defeat the purpose of multiple choice if there was an "all of the above" button.
Almost always I voted on content and sometimes I wished I could vote more than once for really good ones. Some votes were for position or quality.
I have to say thank you for the work you have put in to this site. It functions better than any other forum that I have used and has some great features to pinpoint who and what you are responding to. No other forum does that well. I like this community and feel like I know some of the members well from reading their posts over the years. Most of all this has been a great way to learn about science that is outside my own field.

For Tanypteryx
Hi Tanypteryx (or may I call you hageni?)
While we are talking about them, do all dragonflies have that little area of solid colour on their wing tips?

A hoverbox of info will appear if you hover over your member rating. If you can suggest how to make it more informative I'll update it.

I'm thinking along the same lines. It would have to be customizable by board admins.

Thanks, I like the response tracking features too. Before writing this software I was participating at bulletin boards that discussed bulletin board software, and I suggested such features, but everyone "looked" at me like I had three heads. It seemed like an obvious feature to me, but not so much to other bulletin board developers.

"Member ratings are on a scale from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest). They are a measure of a member's ability to draw votes for their messages over the past 90 days."
It doesn't seem to work in a one to one way though. I vaguely remember that soon after I joined my rating was 10, but then it plummeted to something like 7.5 for no reason I could see. It then climbed back up to 9.9 and stays around there depending mostly whether Faith is in one of her moods or not.
Can you describe how it works, just for interest.

If it only factors in the last 90 days, then it makes sense that the rating can fluctuate without having received any recent cheers/jeersas past ratings slowly fall out of the calculation whether they are negative or positive they will positively or negatively (respectively) affect the 90-day rating.
Merry Christmas.

In addition to what Jon said, your member rating is relative to other member's. The member with the most votes gets a 10, the member with the least votes gets a 1. If you have the most votes you'll get the 10, but if someone else then receives additional votes giving them more than you, then they'll get the 10 and your member rating will decline. It's on a sliding scale.

I assume the jeers and the cheers cancel each other out equally?

That's right, but it's an interesting thought that they shouldn't necessarily have to.

Thumbs Down...This Is Personal
I remember one time when you gave me a negative rating for a post that I made that I saw no problem with---I was soo mad that I went and gave you a negative on every post I could find that you made! I guess I need to take these things less seriously and personally...but among EvC members, Theodoric consistently uses the negative button...on me certainly. Otherwise very few people see me as either very good or very bad.

What was the reasoning behind someone's personal rating varying as a result of someone else's?
That seems more like a competition to beat others than encouragement to grow an individual reputation. I would have thought a mechanism that developed something like a personal handicap would be more appropriate? (Although it seems to work out ok.)
What would happen if someone with a score of, say, 7, didn't post for 90 days? Would their score revert to 10 or stick at 7 - or change because of other's scores have changed?

Re: Thumbs Down...This Is Personal
Theodoric consistently uses the negative button.
Because a lot of your posts are nothing but crap. They are words strung together to sound philosophical and intellectual but are nothing but bullshit and word salad. In lots of your posts one can read the self satisfaction you are getting in trying to sound like a deep religious philosopher, when in reality all it is, is mental masturbation.
If you took time to actual post cogent points I would not jeer you so much. Instead you seem to post mostly personal mental meanderings, that in reality say nothing. If that is what you want to post why don't you pull a Faith and post on a personal blog.

Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts
"God did it" is not an argument. It is an excuse for intellectual laziness.

Well, that's one view, and I can see why you feel that way, but some bring us messages that aren't always in the words.
