Minus 32 right now, minus 44 wind chill. The air is so thick you have to chew it before you swallow it. Poor old sun is having a hard time trying to bore a hole through it.

Don't complain. I like it this way. Or are you volunteering to clear my driveway?

50 with a lot of fog that made driving tricky. And now it's around 16F.

Hummingbirds in the snow
This morning it is 25F and snowing, with about 3 inches on the ground so far.
We have been keeping 4-5 overwintering Anna's Hummingbirds going. The temps have been down in the teens this week so we bring the feeders in at night. We have 3 feeders that are out of sight of each other, so one so cannot dominate them all.

Re: Hummingbirds in the snow
Our hummingbirds have been gone for a while. I got bird feeders up late this fall(can't have them up during the summer because of bears), so we havent been getting much action. Hopefully the overwintering birds will find them soon. Was about -10 this morn, up to about 5 right now.

More Snow
We are having more snow days here. It has been hovering at about 20-22 F since Wednesday and we got about 10 inches of snow yesterday and another 6 inches expected today.
We still have 3 hummingbirds coming to the feeders (actually hanging out right next to the feeders). They get all freaked out when I bring each feeder in every couple hours to nuke em to thaw the ice.
Last winter we didn't get a single flake and barely got below freezing.

Be thankful it isn't 1933 when it reached -54F in Oregon!

Re: More Snow
-10F this morn. Going to be -20F Sun and Mon nights. It takes a lot of wood to keep a house warm at those temps, but as my last propane fill was $5/gal, I don't mind.
Supposedly this Tuesday will be our last below 0F. At least for this month. Supposed to even be above freezing by the 18th.
I have a feeling it is going to be another wet and muddy spring. At least this year I will have grass and a gravel driveway instead of the clay mud and swamp we had last year. So hopefully a little less of the clay mud.

And now for something different
For Melbourne, Australia, tonight's minimum is predicted to be 30C - 86F. after max of 40C -104F, the second highest minimum on record.

Re: More Snow
The only birds we get to feeders here(no hummingbirds of course) are black capped chickadee, Goldfinch and Downy woodpeckers. We did have a couple Pileated Woodpeckers in the fall but none over the winter. We used to see a lot more Hairy and Pileated at our last property but that was an area of pines and mature hardwood. Here we are in a swampy area with some Oak and Maple but mostly Ash and Popple(Quaking Aspen).

Re: More Snow
I am getting chickadee, tufted titmice, nuthatches, juncos, cardinals, and bluejays. I have a dish I put on the railings to the porch, so I can look at the birds come when I am working at my desk.
It is also 'Kitty Television'. The cats decided it's too COLD for outside, but the love looking at the birds, and it's fun to see them plaster themselves to the window trying to get at them.

Re: More Snow
This was early yesterday morning.
There is about 4 times more snow now and snowing hard.
We get a mob of Bushtits that come all at once for the suet and Chickadees, Nuthatches, Juncos, Towees, Townsend's Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Scrub Jays, Goldfinches and Lesser Goldfinches, House Finches, and a bunch of others that I have not ID'd yet.
I grew up east of the Cascades and we were below 0F a lot, but it is rarer to get so cold here in the Willamette Valley.
