Came across this article being reported widely on this side of the pond and thought of EvC. Can't see a topic covering it so thought to give a heads up in case anyone would like to discuss it. Guardian report here

No big deal
This kind of reduction in perceived species is nothing new.
If I recall from grad school (a while back) Simpson once examined all of the Miocene primate evidence and drastically reduced the number of perceived species to just a few.
This is all a normal part of science; as the evidence accumulates it can be better and more accurately understood.

Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

Re: No big deal
Yes, this is just more evidence in an argument that has been going on some time, the possible merging of habilis into erectus is the only thing I can see that would be really significant.

Re: No big deal
Creationists should hate this news. If a bunch of now species are folded into one this will drastically reduce the number of human evolution's missing links.

Re: No big deal
Creationists should hate this news.
Let's see how a creationist would think about this:
  1. Evolutionists did not predict this;
  2. therefore evolution fails yet again;
  3. therefore evolution is refuted;
  4. therefore creationism is proved true.
I don't think you understand creationists.

Oh, that is an understatement. There are a lot of us here that are totally bemused (and amused) by the breed.
