A "quantum", to me, means the smallest unit that something can exists as. Like, like the thinnest you can slice it, but it still being it.
For example, the quantum of U.S. currency is the cent. You can't pay me 1/2 cents because they don't make anything smaller than a penny.
So when you say "a quantum" then I'm left wondering 'a quantum of what?'
