Re: Be willing to step off the cliff
Why has neither president brought up the fact that some scientists are saying current trends without action could lead to 75% of the planet dead by 2300? That’s my grandchildren’s lifetime. (my daughter will soon turn one years old.) Recheck your math. Just what would human longevity have to be if your daughter, who will exit child bearing age in the middle of this century, would have a child who will be alive nearly 3 centuries from now. 200+ years? Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Thoreau: Civil Disobedience (1846) The apathy of the people is enough to make every statue leap from its pedestal and hasten the resurrection of the dead. William Lloyd Garrison. If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. Frederick Douglass

Re: Be willing to step off the cliff
Recheck your math True. My grandchild if would live 100 years would die around 2130 if born when my daughter is 20. (2013+ 19 years =2032 +100 years = 2132) Still, the atmosphere and the planet is not a system we can just turn on and off quickly or easily. We should be concerned about what that means for our species. keep your mind from this way of enquiry, for never will you show that not-being is ~parmenides

Re: Be willing to step off the cliff
He does not have to face reelection, True, but he does have an obligation to make sure that Democrats are at least viable in the midterm elections of 2014, and some smaller obligation not to make Democrat a legitimate cuss word in 2016. Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Re: Be willing to step off the cliff
We should be concerned about what that means for our species. Yes, that would be logical. But what decisions do we ever make on the basis of what they mean for our species? Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Yes, that would be logical. But what decisions do we ever make on the basis of what they mean for our species? Well...Traditionally problems have not threatened the entire planet at once...Evolve or die right? Re: Be willing to step off the cliff
Hi Omnivorous,
He spent most of his first term seeking bipartisan accords with the TP-dominated GOP reps. It's time to play hardball. He must not start negotiations by offering compromises before place settings are even on the table. Indeed. AND one could point out the the remaining GOP that the big losers in their party were TeaPoopers, their numbers have dwindled so their influence should dwindle. If there is any kind of mandate it is that people do not want that kind of politics. So walk of the purported "cliff" - take that step towards fiscal responsibility, then work on revising the tax code to a more just, simple system with few loopholes. Enjoy.

Yea, Tim Jennings IS pretty fucking great, what with leading the league with INT's and 2 already in the first half. "Science is interesting, and if you don't agree you can fuck off." -Dawkins

Re: Be willing to step off the cliff
NoNukes writes: True, but he does have an obligation to make sure that Democrats are at least viable in the midterm elections of 2014, and some smaller obligation not to make Democrat a legitimate cuss word in 2016. And an even greater obligation to restore some semblance of economic justice to the tax code. If we walk off the "cliff" because the GOP holds 99% of us hostage to 1%, I think Democratic interests will be served just fine in 2014 and 2016. Obama has vowed to veto any extension of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. I think he's on the right track. "If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."
