Re: Help Crashfrog spend $1000 on a computer
I currently own a business. Got an i3, i5, and an i7. The i7 is totally badass!
Anyway, I don't know what it is with you gamers. Spending thousands of dollars on gaming systems.
Anyway, if I were you I'd save that $900 instead of spending on unnecessary hardware. Try to guess how much I spent on my 3 computers. All 3 have 8gig of ram ddr3. Around the house combined, I have 15TB of drive space. With my unlimited pass with blockbuster, I'm on a mission to digitize all of their blu-ray movies LOL.

If you want your games to look pretty and run at 60 fps then that is how much you need to spend. If all you want to do is watch movies and surf the 'net then a much cheaper computer will definitely do.

Well, it is necessary. My ASUS laptop intermittently crashes to black and then won't boot for a day; the video card doesn't seem to accelerate anything anymore - DIII runs like a PowerPoint slideshow. I've had it for four years, it's heavy, the battery sucks, and I'm tired of it. I managed to scrape together some old hardware so, in the interim, I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on an old Pentium D with one gig of RAM and two GT 7600's SLI'd together.
So, this time around I'm going to do what I've been telling people to do, lately - handle their portable computing needs with a cheap, portable tablet (I'm going to get an iPad) and put the rest of their computer cash into a desktop. Amortized over the 4-5 years I expect to run this system, it's not bad, and I do still play games - but the graphics card will come in handy for my monitors (I expect I'll be running three when all is said and done) and the CAD-type stuff I'm starting to do for work.

I'd like to hear how this works out for you or the people you've advise. I have a smaller (7") tablet, and for me that smaller tablet is a poor substitute for a laptop, particularly for writing/coding. The tablet is great for consuming media and reading email, but I hate entering text on it.
In particular I'd like to know if the extra real estate on the iPad makes enough difference so that it is reasonable to forego a laptop.
There's no doubt that desktops are a better bargain than new laptops, but then my laptop is 100 dollar, used Dell D800, and I don't do any gaming.

Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Thoreau: Civil Disobedience (1846)
The apathy of the people is enough to make every statue leap from its pedestal and hasten the resurrection of the dead. William Lloyd Garrison.
Choose silence of all virtues, for by it you hear other men's imperfections, and conceal your own. George Bernard Shaw
