It's always a shame when people leave a forum but the worst way to go is with a whine - either disappear quietly without looking back or say goodbye properly. Thank us for all the fish or use a verbal kalashnikov if you have to, but don't whine, it's embarassing.

There is physical evidence of natural causes. There is statistical evidence of supernatural causes. There have been studies done on paranormal phenomena and data gathered in the studies show things happening at rates that are beyond the statistical norm. These data cannot be tested in a scientific manner , however, because the causal agents refuse to be tested in that manner. I'm sure we'd all love to see this evidence. Why not start a thread and we'll discuss it.Life, don't talk to me about life - Marvin the Paranoid Android

I just told you that they cannot be tested by the scientific method. They can only be observed and data taken from them to be analyzed statistically. The information can be found at a fierce debate about the paranormal at "Theology Online". If you have data, statistical or otherwise, it can be examined scientifically. As can the method used to obtain and analyse it. Data is stuff that exists in the natural world, so science can look at it. CS writes: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" still retains its value in spite of the fact that the Bible has some errors. But it wasn't invented by Christianity - or even Judaism. Or rather, it's not unique to them, it was invented many times across most if not all cultures.
Statements that mirror the Golden Rule appear in Ancient Egypt in the story of The Eloquent Peasant.[8][clarification needed] Rushworth Kidder discusses the early contributions of Confucius (551—479 B.C.) (See a version in Confucianism below). Kidder notes that this concept's framework appears prominently in many religions, including "Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism, and the rest of the world's major religions".[9] According to Greg M. Epstein, " 'do unto others'... is a concept that essentially no religion misses entirely."[10] Simon Blackburn also states that the Golden Rule can be "found in some form in almost every ethical tradition". CS writes: I know, but that's beside the point. It still retains its value. It retains its value, but as well as it not mattering that whether the Christian bible is literally true, it means that it doesn't even matter if you don't use the bible at all - more or less any religious book will do. In fact it doesn't even need to be religious, try the European declaration on Human Rights or even this one: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal etc"Life, don't talk to me about life - Marvin the Paranoid Android

foreveryoung writes: Humanists have adopted much of the morality found in the bible. Wrong. Empathy - the emotion that creates the golden rule, do as you would be done by - is built into people. It's source is ourselves so it's not surprising that you find it in the writings of many of our social organisations, religious or secular.
You could completely eradicate Christianity today and that morality would remain. Exactly
The problem would come if anyone ever started to question the basis for that morality. Without the biblical basis, all that is left is utilitarianism. Without a genesis that is absolutely, literally true, there is no rational reason to accept the bible as a basis for morality that goes beyond utilitarian purposes. You've talked yourself full circle. As we don't need the bible for morality, it's loss can not matter to that morality. And as there is nothing absolute in the bible anyway your point is doubly mute.Life, don't talk to me about life - Marvin the Paranoid Android

foreveryoung writes: You can also use a box of capn crunch cereal for good ends, but you would never use it to look for the ultimate purpose and meaning in life. If the bible is not true, there is no basis for building either upon it. Well you've accepted that the bible is incorrect on many issues and is therefore not "true" in the absolute sense that many claim. You've also accepted that we don't need the bible for our morality. So we're only left with wondering whether it nevertheless gives us a "purpose and meaning in life." And of course it could if you want it to. Some people get the same from Jainism, some from art and music, some from charitable works and some from sex. Personally, I get it from family, friends, my work and a great steak every so often. Whatever floats your boat as they say. The problem with your belief though is that the moment you start to doubt that it's actually true (ie that there's a loving god that cares about you, who is Christian - and only exactly your kind of Christian - who will look after you in paradise or send you to burn in hell depending mostly on what you do with no clothes on and who you do it with.) the moment you start to doubt that, it does rather mess up the head. So, if it's a purpose and meaning for life you're looking for, I'd recommend you look for it in life and leave whatever happens after to look after itself.Life, don't talk to me about life - Marvin the Paranoid Android

foreveryoung writes: I am fucking tired of people being unwilling to discuss ideas without screaming about fucking evidence. You can all go to hell. I am done here. Fuck each and everyone of you save the creationists. That seems to be a standard creationist response to losing an argument. It's not terribly Christian is it? Don't you worry that Jesus might not like it? Anyhow, I'm adding it to my collection of vile things creationists say that demonstrate that they are actually not Christian at all.Life, don't talk to me about life - Marvin the Paranoid Android
