I'll see your Comfort book and raise you: Sun 500 miles away
Just when you think: "No, no, they can't get any stupider" ... they get stupider.
franko mentioned this website on another thread, so I checked it out (I should have known better). I have never seen such ridiculousness in all my life! At first I thought it was just a joke, but I think these people are truly serious. Here is just one out of a boat-load of absurdity.
quote:
The Sun: Millions of miles away?
Praise the Lord! He has shown me how to prove scientifically that the sun is no more than 500 miles overhead.
Here is the proof:
To start off with, the sun is hot enough to glow yellow, so we can use Wein's Displacement Law to determine the temperature.
Wein's Displacement Law:
Peak Wavelength in meters = displacement constant / temperature in Kelvin
Yellow light has a wavelength between 570nm and 580nm, so we'll solve for 575nm. Since we are working with nanometers rather than meters, we'll simplify the math by multiplying the displacement constant by 10^9.
575 = 2897768.5/T
575 * T = 2897768.5
T = 2897768.5/575
T = 5039.6 K (8611.6 F)
So the sun is about 5039.6 Kelvin.
Now, the average temperature of the earth is 59 F, or about 288 K. The mean temperature gradient of the troposphere is 6 K/km, so let's solve for the distance.
d = (5039.6 - 288)/6
d = 791.9 km (491.1 miles)
There you have it. The sun is roughly 491.1 miles overhead. Depending on the exact shade of yellow (whether it's closer to 570nm or 580nm), this figure could be off by as much as 5 miles. However, I don't have a spectrometer handy, and I'm willing to live with an uncertainty of 5 miles. It's not like I'm planning to visit anytime soon -- my shoes would melt .
The LORD is so good to me. Praise the sweet name of Jesus.
Pastor Billy-Reuben

Upon request I will cite scripture for all these facts in God's Holy Word.
And keep in mind .... these people reject ALL science - not just science that disagrees with the Bible, but ALL science. So I wonder what scripture reveals the wavelength of yellow light??? Bizarre. Totally Bizarre.

Nah, the Landover Baptist Church is a well-known legpull. However, Ray Comfort actually exists. It's a strange world we live in.

"Pastor Billy-Reuben"?
Bilirubin is a by-product of the breakdown of red blood cells. It's responsible for the yellow coloration of bruises as they age, as well as the yellow color of urine. Babies can be born jaundiced with elevated bilirubin levels which they must be treated for; my first son was born with that, which is where I learned of bilirubin.
The problem when you're trying to parody bat-shit is that the real thing tends to out-do your parody. And it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish real bat-shit from fake.
PS
I just noticed that the article dealt with the sun's yellow color, like bilirubin's color. Clever! I would assume that this was "Pastor Billy-Reuben's" only contribution on the site.

I wandered into the room where a cross hubby was sitting at the computer, trying and failing to do something. Beside him stood our 11 yr old son with a huge grin on his face, stroking his head and singing "Soft Kitty"!
Yes, they're both huge fans of "The Big Bang Theory" and Sheldon Cooper. Apparently they've voted for me to be Leonard.

I just started watching this show and while I do find it charming, there seem to be a few things I can't seem to get past. 1: "Leonard" constantly stares off camera when speaking to someone (as opposed to, ya know, making eye contact with them like normal people do) as if he is blatantly reading from the cue cards or some such. 2: some of the dialogue seems very forced (example: when the broad next door corners one of them to blather on about her problems).
Granted, I am only 5 episodes in to the first season so hopefully these issues sort themselves out.... or are they part of the allure of the show??

This, I think, is an artistic choice by the actor, Johnny Galecki. It is a mannerism that I have seen many nerdy geek types exhibit during interpersonal communication.

Again, drawing on my own personal experience, this kind of stilted language usage is typical of the type of person these characters exemplify.

I would say they are part of the allure of the show, at least for me they are. In my college days, I was part of the College Bowl community while at two different schools. I had many friends with similar idiosyncrasies, and this show brings back many fond memories.

Yea, I get that and would understand if it were Sheldon, who seems borderline autistic to me. I totally grasp the show concept and have zero problem following along (which prompted my mother to call me a fucking nerd because it's way over her head), but it just seems unnatural. I mean, neither one of them is a neckbeard. But Leonard seems like a normal person who is smart as fuck and has nerdy friends. Perhaps it is because I still see him as David from Roseanne. Having two other cast members from Roseanne doesn't help that either....

Muriel, you are wrong. You have been affected by the fundamentalism of a religious age. You do not believe except what you are told. You think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by your little mind. All minds, Muriel, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, Muriel, there are dinosaurs. They exist as certainly as science and knowledge exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no dinosaurs. It would be as dreary as if there were no MURIELS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in dinosaurs! You might as well not believe in stars. You might get all your explorers to search the entire world, but even if they found no dinosaurs, what would that prove? Nobody sees real dinosaurs, but that's because they're extinct, like dodos, the passenger pigeon and the giant sloth, and that is no sign that there's no such thing as dinosaurs. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see electrons dancing around a nucleus? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only study and analysis, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, MURIEL, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
No dinosaurs! Thank God! they live, and they live forever. A thousand years from now, Muriel, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, they will continue to make glad the heart of children and paleontologists everywhere.
--Percy (with apologies to Francis Pharcellus Church)
