Wait a minute!!
Although I appriciate strong faith and wish more people did, I would like to assert two points in contrast to your statement, 'no- the best option is to believe God's words if you are christian'.
1. THE BIBLE WAS WRITTEN BY HUMANS SO MISTAKES DO NOT FALSIFY THE CHRISTIAN FAITH, IT MAKES US IMPERFECT, AND WE ARE. The Scriptures are(accurate) interpretations of God's word. The effect of God's original word however many millenia ago has been that of playing 'telephone'. First He said something, somebody wrote it down, or in some other way spread the Word. Let's face it, as fallible humans somebody probably screwed up the message by maybe a single word. No big deal. Then, when people started writing Bibles I'm sure there were mistakes that were overlooked, and when the Bible was, over the years, translated into however many dozens of languages, there are bound to be either mistranslations or phrases that just don't directly translate to whatever language. Whether you believe that or not, it's clear that the Bible was physically written by humans. The Bible specifically says humans are fallible. Need proof? Ezekial said Nebuchadnezzar would conquer Egypt, and he didn't. Fear not, because somewhere in the New Testament(Memory loss) Jesus said there were some chinks in the old one. God can cover for our mistakes, so don't worry about Bible typos. Sorry about the long-windedness..
2. WITHOUT QUESTIONING RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY WE WOULD STILL BE UNDER THE CORRUPT CHURCH OF THE DARK AGES. The church interpreted God's word in certain ways that it would benefit them, and for no other reason. Shoot, they even made up their own rules that weren't in Scripture. If we don't ask a question once in awhile, we'll never know if we're walking the straight and narrow. It's thanks to guys like Voltaire and John Wesley(and a BILLION other great folks both spiritual and atheist) that we can use our own spiritual sense to better our understanding of the Bible's mysteries. God is all for being an individual and trying to better understand Him. By all means, don't test your Creator. Test the people who dictate their own views of the Word.

Kick the tires
Trouble with fundamentalists is they fail.and even refuse, to kick the tires. One can debate as to how much of the Bible, Old or New, was inspired by God but one must admit that it was written down by humans and it should be obvious to one an all that the ignorance of the age and their personal prejudices have seeped into some of the verbage.
Compare the supposed murderous doings of God in the Old testament to the love and compassion of Jesus. The difference is night and day.
In Genesis God unleashes a flood that drowns most all of humanity.
Imagine yourself Noah look out from a window in the ark. What does he see? Evil men and women begging to get on board. Look again. What do the women have at their side and in their arms? Little children and babies. Can you imagine Jesus being involved in something so dispicable as that? If Noah had any morals or a spine he would have thrown the "unclean" animals overboard and taken the children and babies. That scenario in Genesis cannot be a true depiction of an act of God. It is either the product of a very sick mind or is a story in need of a new interpretation.

Re: Creationism's problem
NosyNed writes:
1) To be a creationist one espouses the idea that:
  • The earth is 6,000 (or so) years old
  • There was a global flood about 4,500 (or so) years ago
  • and a whole bunch of other things (no big bang, most of physics is wrong, most of geology is wrong, science can't find anything to be a real truth )
  • The Bible tells one how, not just why, God created the universe, earth and all life.
2) The "proof" for this is that every word of the Bible is literaly true
3) If any part of the Bible is not true then it is all false.
That is what I think a basic view of creationism is.
The problem with this is that there then 100's, 1,000's and 10,000's of indivdual facts that have to be true for the whole house of cards to hold together. Then the creationists say that one's faith can't take any of them being not true. Now all it takes is for the faithful to be convinced of just one of these and the whole thing collapses in a heap.
Is the earth that old? Did the exodus happen? Are there transitionals between kinds? Are there contradictions in the available texts of the Bible? Is there traces of a world wide flood all happening at once? Are some of what the creationist "scientists" saying a lie? There are too many links in the chain of reasoning the creationist is trying to hold together. One weak link and it is done.
This is what is wrong with creationism. The majority of Christians accept the Bible as an inspired message from God without demanding that it be the last word on all possible knowledge. They accept creation but not creationism.
Does anyone see a different definition of what a creationist is?
