We received one foot of heavy snow last night, power likely to be out for a few more days. We have a generator, but cable Internet is out. AT&T Internet access for my iPad wasn't accepted until just now. Power might be out at work, too, won't know until tomorrow, if I can get there as many trees are down. Presence here might be minor for a little while.

Frankly, my jealous ass is sick of having you lot rub it in. I love snow storms (yes, even driving in them).

Thanks for the well wishes. We're not suffering as we have a generator, but there's no Internet or cable. Phones and this iPad are our only connection to the outside world. Boredom will be our greatest enemy.
Work is also without power. My wife's work does not have a storm hotline, so she's dtriving over now, she'll know soon if they have power. Apparently the trees on the roads have been cleared for the most part.
Here in New England we don't think in terms of global warming but of climate change. I've been 25 years in New England, but the last 10 years have been nothing like before. Storms that cut power across wide swathes now happen about once a year, and this is the second time this year, as there was hurricane Irene a couple months ago.

I agree completely.
Snow storm = can't go to work.
Snow storm = can go out with my camera!

Just chillin'
I've got the best of both worlds going on right now: I've got power here at home, where I am right now because the plant where I work does not!
I did have to shovel a foot and a half of snow off my driveway yesterday. Took about an hour and a half. I usually have a plow man come and take care of it, but it's so early in the season that the ground hasn't frozen yet, so the risk of tearing up the lawn is high.

Are the storms that different or might this be the result of aging infrastructure and lack of oversight of the utility companies and the reassignment of maintenance and infrastructure to costs as opposed to assets?

Re: whats changed?
I've lived in New Hampshire my whole life (except for 6 years when I was in the Navy), and it seems to me that Percy is right that we are seeing damaging storms more frequently. Probably the utilities could be doing a better job, but an inch of freezing rain is an inch of freezing rain. 40mph winds and a foot of snow on pine branches (boughs?) are going to cause power outages, period.

Re: whats changed?
Weather's different now. In our area leaves used to begin changing at the end of August, now it's the end of September, and this year it was the beginning of October. Most of the leaves are still on the trees. August used to be a killer month for lawns, these days we breeze along with no extra watering. Major snowfalls have become more frequent. Overall the weather has gradually become wetter, more temperate and more extreme. Here's a document that seems to have a lot of data for New England generally: http://www.climateandfarming.org/...Sheets/I.2Indicators.pdf

Re: whats changed?
I don't think anyone is saying that the weather is not changing.
The question is though, whether the infrastructure has been maintained properly and is that a major cause of the increased number and the extent of outages?

I would tend to doubt it. Chech out some of the pictures from today's Boston Globe. This is the kind of thing that happened wholesale around here. If the tree falls on a power line, that's that:
October storm pelts East Coast with snow - Boston.com
In the case of ice storms, it isn't just falling trees but also ice build-up on power lines and other lines that can become hundreds of pounds, snapping lines and poles.

Re: whats changed?
Sure, and earlier ice storms are more destructive than later ice storms since the trees still have leaves which increases the loading.
