Looney Tunes, or Music in General

I have a friend in school who would say at least 80% of the bands you just listed. He's been trying to get me to download that dimmu borgir guy for weeks.

I really enjoyed Peter Gabriel's new album Up. I saw him in concert in Munich last year and despite the fact that he currently looks like Santa on methadone the music is really good. Brian Ferry was also one of the acts at the concert and there are a few good tracks on his new CD.But I tend towards the harder stuff and am enjoying the new album from the Guano Apes, the Rasumus, and if I want to really piss of the neighbors or see how far I have to go for my wife to threaten divorce I put on some Rob Zombie...who would have thought a duet with Ozzy could be so sweet yet sound like a car starting?

Dimmu is an interesting band. Their marketing strategy involves the use of violent and satanic imagery, so the sight of one of their CDs would probably turn you off pretty hard. But I like their take on symphonic speed metal.[This message has been edited by zephyr, 10-07-2003]

Don't feel so bad, most of what I listen to is 20 years before "my time". I don't really know much of today's stuff either, or even the stuff that was supposed to be my generation. When I was growing up I only knew of 2 radio stations; the country one and the oldies one. Suffice it to say eventually I knew more about my parents music than they did.

Moose,Your tastes are cool indeed. How interesting that you're a fellow fan of loopy geniuses such as Captain Beefheart and Sun Ra.I'm also fascinated by the 50's-60's heyday of modern jazz. Miles's stuff is a bit static for my liking, but I love that Coltrane set you recommended. Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is definitely Mingus at his most flamboyant and imaginative. The eloquent, eccentric Ornette Coleman has always been my favorite, especially The Shape of Jazz to Come. I have a real soft spot for Cecil Taylor's mind-blowing Conquistador! as well. Andrew Hill's Point of Departure assembled a stellar cast (including mad Eric Dolphy) for a free-jazz milestone.------------------

Wow, I'm surprised by the lack of "indie" music in this thread.I like a lot of JPop (Japanese popular music) (Chara... mmm... ) and anime sound tracks... plus, JPop covers of english songs generally turn some heads (such as a cover of "Stop In The Name Of Love" by Globe - a JPop band who has songs like "Overseas Call", which consists of, to a danceable beat, a person going up an elevator and making a call to someone who doesn't speak their language; and "2" which uses a cash register as an insturment).I like a lot of dance covers... I have a ragtime version of the inspector gadget theme and a techno version of "The Price Is Right". I have a trance version of "Killing Me Softly", remixes of songs from the video games "Star Control II", and orchestral covers from Final Fantasy VII. Mmm, there's some good video game music... when I want to disturb people, I listen to the sound tracks of "Dungeon Keeper" or "Blood". My directory of ameteur evil music works pretty well too... my favorite is probably "Talking About God", which is a 7-minute remix of a televangelist speaking fire and brimstone lyrics to .I created a 13 disk archive of peace music, ranging from Yoko Ono doing a dance cover of "Give Peace A Chance" to a parody of "Fast Car" called "SUV", to a song called "Anthrax" which talks about the anthrax attacks and 9/11, with references to how it's probably not healthy to breathe in "computers, and carpets, skin and bones and telephones, and file cabnets; coke machines, firemen, landing gear, and cement", despite the EPA statement. The songs by the Compassionate Conservatives are some of my favorites in the set. But it's hard to pick favorites I have an hour's worth of Afghan music sung by a band of children associated with the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan. I have the talking Merriam Webster Dictionary singing songs ranging from "We Like Repartee' " (to the tune of "We Like To Party") to "Wolly Bully"I like Tori Amos, and Tori Amos mixes - my one pop indulgence. Tori is a goddess. Ok, Ani DiFranco too... anyone who writes something like "Self Evident" ("... it doesn't take a weatherman to look around and see the weather; Jeb said he'd deliver Florida, folks, and boy did he ever; and we hold these truths to be self evident: number one, George W. Bush is. not. president...") is up there in my books I could go on forever... I'm currently listening to Destiny's Child singing to AC/DC ("Destiny's Problem Child"). I think I'll probably listen to The Laziest Men On Mars next (they also have some good pusher robot/shover robot mixes). Or perhaps some Chikyuu Shoujo Arujyuna ("Earth Girl Arujyuna" - an anime whose sound track is by the very talented Yoko Kanno)...------------------

Hi Rei,I agree, there is some phenomenal orchestrations from video games and anime. I have been getting into several of the Japanese techno groups and Arabic Rai from Cheb Mami.------------------

Oooh, arabic techno? That sounds really neat. I only know a handful of arabic words, and have a subpar ability to read arabic (I usually have to look up about 1/3 of the characters ).------------------

Happy to report I finally got the Shins' new CD Chutes Too Narrow, and it's filled with the same brittle melodies and off-kilter lyrics as their debut. I just know we'll be seeing James Mercer warble 'Mine's not a High Horse' on TRL soon.While in Miami I located el nuevo disco de Basque rocker Mikel Erentxun, Ciudades de paso. Much as I like his new batch of tunes, some are, ahem, familiar sounding. I hope New Order's lawyers don't chase him into his outpost in the Pyrenees for the passing resemblance 'twixt 'Loco de atar' and 'Blue Monday.' I don't recall who did the 80's radio staple 'Pure and Simple,' but neither, it seems, does Mikel's publishing company. Buena suerte, hermano.------------------
