it seems to me that if you were in a black hole and looked out towards the event horizon, you would see stars.
Yes - the event horizon is only defined globally, not locally (in other words, you need an outside-time god's eye view to determine its existence). An in-falling observer will think she is simply falling through space external to the black hole, towards an ever receeding event horizon, until arrival at the singularity.
