Re: new way to enforce speed limit
"There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjectures out of such a trifling investment of facts." I am sure that nowhere in science is that more true than in that science, so-called, of 'evolution'." -Mark Twain, Life On The Mississippi

NASA scientists in 1996 proclaimed that the six ounce rock broken off from a Mars meteorite discovered in Antarctica in 1984, displayed evidence that suggests bacteria (ie...life) once existed on the fourth planet. The rock contained flecks of chemical compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, iron sulfide, and magnetite. News around the world hailed the findings of August 7th 1996 to be the most important discovery in all of human history. However the excitement soon dwindled when the same chemicals were found in moon rocks where it is clear that life does not nor ever has existed.

The Orgueil meteorite hoax
In 1965, a fragment of the Orgueil meteorite, kept in a sealed glass jar in Montauban since its discovery, was found to have a seed capsule embedded in it, whilst the original glassy layer on the outside remained apparently undisturbed. Despite great initial excitement, the seed capsule was shown to be that of a European rush, glued into the fragment and camouflaged using coal dust. The outer "fusion layer" was in fact glue. Whilst the perpetrator is unknown, it is thought that the hoax was aimed at influencing 19th century debate on spontaneous generation by demonstrating the transformation of inorganic to biological matter.

The Scopes trial
Anyone who has ever been involved in the Evolution vs Creation debate for very long, is familiar with the famous 1925 Scopes trial, where those mean o'l creationists nailed good little biology substitute teachers Scopes to a cross for teaching evolution to be true. Mr. Scopes was found guilty and fined $100 dollars for his crime, which was later overturned. But this trial has been the most cited act of "persecution" against evolutionists by creationist in history, and was probably the focal point for rallying sympathy to the evolutionary plight.
However one of the trials least known or discussed facts is what was one of Scopes biggest defending arguments during the trial. Scopes ACLU attorney " Clarence Darrow, put American politician William Jennings Bryan (who often defended Creationism) on the stand. Darrow then proceeded to ask Bryan if he realized that in his home state of Nebraska there had once lived a whole race of men a million years ago. Bryan said he didn't realize anything of the sort and he didn't believe it either. So Darrow then brought in Dr. Henry Fairfield Osborn of the American Museum of Natural History, the most respected palaeontologist in America at the time. He testified that just three years prior, in 1922, evidence of a whole race of men had been discovered to have lived in Nebraska a million years ago. Bryan was completely dumbfounded. And of course he was made to appear the fool.
This was published all over the world. Scientists referred to this evidence as Hesperopithecus haroldcookii, meaning "Western ape-man". Reconstructions and drawings of these ape-men appeared in text books everywhere. Of course by now many of you may have guessed that I am referring to the famous Nebraska man "oops" of scientific history. And yes scientists did finally discover the whole race of ape-men based on one tooth to be merely a pigs tooth. But that was of little consolation to the public humiliation and unrepairable damage to his reputation, that Bryan was made to endure. Oh well....oops!

Re: The Scopes trial
Osborn did not testify at Scopes. Nebraska Man was not mentioned at the the Scopes trial.
I stand corrected everyone. Osborn did not testify in the trial about Nebraska man. It was actually during the proceedings leading up to the trial that Osborn and Bryan had an ongoing public debate in the News. And it was there in this debate that Osborn presented his Nebraska man evidence and publicly humiliated Bryan. Please see Bryan Vs Osborn. On the eve of the actual trial Osborn suddenly went silent about his Nebraska man. Again I say...oops!
The image of Nebraska Man was not published all over the world. It was not presented in textbooks, only in a single magazine.
Well I'm having trouble confirming or debunking this claim so if you could prove this I would appreciate it. BTW thanks for the heads up about the Osborn / Scopes error.
When Modulous said that this thread was a place for you to "be funny", I don't think this is quite what he had in mind. Your posts here today are the wrong kind of funny. We are after funny-on-purpose, AKA wit. Your posts are certainly laughable, but that's not quite the same thing.
I see. So what you are really saying here is that while it is very entertaining to laugh at creationists mistakes, its not very funny when its an evolutionary boo-boo?
