as a Christian I feel abortion is wrong, and it is homicide, and a cardinal sin. as an American I feel as if it is wrong to tell someone else what they can and cannot do with their body. This attitude has always puzzled me. I cannot understand anyone who thinks it's homicide, but believes it should not be outlawed. That you don't want to impose your beliefs about sin on others is easy to understand. But I'd appreciate it if you could expand on your reasons for believing you shouldn't prohibit others from homicide. From the Political Compass thread:
In most cases nobody is force into having sex..... I see. So once a woman has sex her status, by virtue of that act, regardless of anything else, is reduced to below a clump of indistinguishable cells. And don't give me any of this baby crap. You'd prohibit any termination at any stage of pregnancy, even of a blastocyst that is less than 0.2 mm in diameter.
Take a dime out of your pocket, or get one from wherever you tend to accumulate change. Do it right now. Go ahead, I'll wait. *** Now, look carefully at that dime. See Roosevelt's eye? How in the world without resorting to a slippery slope fallacy, can you equate something less than 0.2 mm in diameter to a fully functioning adult human being? There was a time when our nation did legislate it as unlawfully killing that other person unable to speak for and defend itself against pain and death. Really? I wasn't aware there was ever a Federal Law banning abortion. Do you happen to have a citation? Also, are you planning on replying to my earlier post in this thread, or will it simply stand as silent testimony to your inability to respond? Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps...
Maybe, maybe, maybe... Yes but, yes but, yes but... All you have is a bunch of speculation and hand waving away obvious, significant developmental facts and you raise the interests of the fetus above that of the woman. I remember someone once saying that if men could get pregnant abortion would be a constitutional right. It really is quite impossible for you to empathize with anyone else, isn't it? The problem I have with that is that it's not her body that's in question. It's that other person's body which she and it's father caused to become a live human being Let me ask you this question. Suppose you worked at a restaurant and inadvertently gave someone else hepatitis. Would they be entitled to part of your liver? Could they compel you to submit to life threatening surgery and the loss of part of your liver to save their life if necessary? If someone was irresponsible at simply buying condoms and having unprotected sex, why on earth would you want such a person to care for a child? Well, they could just let someone adopt them. After all, I'm sure they would all turn out to be healthy, white, blond-haired, blue-eyed little cherubs that are always in demand, and certainly not a diseased crack baby of uncertain racial history that would be raised by a series of abusive foster parents. Aw geez, and you were doing so nice there for a while.
I prefer not to hide behind the veil of denial, as we split hairs on "what is life?" or "what is a person?". I know some here are fond of that underhanded tactic, but I prefer to shoot from the hip. There's nothing underhanded about understanding that this:
is not a human being. The argument that it's a human being at birth and there's no clear point of demarcation anywhere along the line of development so it must be a human being at conception is called a slippery slope argument. Is an egg a chicken? Is an apple seed an apple tree? Of course not. A blastocyst is not a human being. Theodoric writes: raised by a series of abusive foster parents.
I just want to point out that the majority of foster parents are not abusive. As a foster parent I do take offense at stereotypes that paint foster parents as abusive. First let me humbly apologize. I fully understand that the vast majority of foster parents are self-sacrificing, loving people who do a great service to the children they raise and to society. I didn't mean to suggest otherwise and regret it if what I said gave that impression. By the same token, I also didn't mean to imply that all non-white children placed for adoption are diseased crack babies. My point was simply that the naive assumption that all unwanted pregnancies can be solved by putting the children up for adoption ignores harsh realities that many pregnant women face every day. Oh, and you have no idea how much it pains me to say this, but good luck to the Pack in the Superbowl. I agree with bluescat, the answer to all three questions is no. But in the first hypothetical it frequently is, and should be, a crime of some sort to kill a fetus without consent of the woman.

After all, society has put the line at birth. Don't know where you're from, but in the U.S., most states ban third trimester abortions with certain exceptions. Society most definitely has not put the line at birth. If you are really concerned about abortions then start a movement to adopt any and all unwanted children and raise them until at least age eighteen. And begin education programs that teach kids how to avoid pregnancy. All of that should be included, but all studies have shown that abstinence only education increases the rate of teen pregnancy. If you don't teach them how to avoid if they are going to have sex (because no matter how hard prudes and holier-than-thous scream ABSTINENCE, some kids aren't going to listen), then teen pregnancies will continue to be a problem.
Let me ask you this; which is worse, educating kids about avoiding pregnancy or more abortions, because that is your choice. If you truly are concerned about lowering the abortion rate, the single most effective thing you can do is educate. Why do you hate education? I think of all worldviews, christianity provides the best foundation for this. Ramen. It's far from clear from what you said, so I'll just ask; do you favor educating children about safe sex? But then again, in a perfect world, there wouldn't be need for any abortion, right ? So a better world would be one with a need for fewer abortions. This brings us back to my so far unanswered question: do you favor education in schools about safe sex?
