seriously, can i nominate a post of the year? or is it a bit early for that? i don't think i've seen any post so apropos to both the topic it's in, and the board as a whole, with so much actual content and argument, and so persuasively written.
i just wish he'd found a better title.

I nominate this post, not because I especially agree with the conclusion, but because of its grounding in evidence about an obscure but interesting event, the strength of the reasoning, and the remarkably good discussion it provoked.

Crashfrog about advertising....

The people with positions more sophisticated than a sound bite have said exactly this and it is good to see sound reasoning being applied in this way.
crashfrog writes:
But corporations continue to spend billions on it every year. Because it works! Because speech matters. Because advocacy works. Because it's possible to influence millions of people in entirely predictable ways as a result of mass media. If you were defending ad expenditures, the mere correlation between a mass change in behavior and the presence of advertising would be sufficient. And, similarly, it's sufficient in this case.

If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be. --Thomas Jefferson

Recognition
Maybe it was the emotional tone or the fact that I agree, or both, but it struck me and I feel this deserves some recognition.

Re: Recognition
What AZPaul just said ^ .
An accurate telling of a terribly common story - and a 16-year-old is far from the young end of the range, too.

Re: Recognition
Thanks for the kudos, especially from 3 fine gents such as yourselves. I'm glad it struck a cord with you, AZPaul3, and I was emotionally driven in a post by a fact that I used to see quite often.
