Admin writes: The reply/quote button is disabled through the control panel, but I've just enabled it so people can prove they're more disciplined now,... Perhaps the problem greater than that of too many nested quotes, was that people would do edits of the quoted and not get the coding correct. You would end up with a big pile of text, unable to determine which part came from which member. For an admin, fixing such was very difficult and very time consuming.
... but I'm sure Adminnemooseus will disable it again at the first abuse he sees. Ever since the "Great Hacking Event" I've been a lowly "Administrator". I'd need my "Director" status restored to disable the "reply with quote". "Director" status is also needed to delete new Mabus registrations. Adminnemooseus

My text in red, the rest is a copy/paste.
Jar's message 8: Admin writes: ApostateAbe writes: Panda writes: Probably a wise decision. Huntard writes:
From what I recall, the buttons are absent on purpose, to avoid people having quotes within quotes within quotes within....etc. which can quickly clutter a thread. I think Percy (he writes all the software for this board) will probably someday add buttons for that, but when, is of course hard to say. Yes, that's part of it. The big problem was that in any discussion involving long posts, which are common here, too often people would click the reply/quote button without trimming any text, and after a chain of just a few replies messages would quickly become prohibitively long. The reply/quote button is disabled through the control panel, but I've just enabled it so people can prove they're more disciplined now, but I'm sure Adminnemooseus will disable it again at the first abuse he sees. A planned feature is to be able to select text, then click a button to have it automatically quoted. And, with minimal effort it can be used. Percy, also consider a limit of say three or four nested quotes.

Also, back then, I believe there may have only been the "[quote]" style quote, and that also may have been before the "Reply to" and "Reply from" links. A while back, I tried and failed to find a example mess from back then. Adminnemooseus

Uhm, that was ApostateAbe you quoted. You switched the guy that posted on this forum the most with a guy who has like 115 posts? jar writes:![]()

I am seeing Message 20 as a mess. But Message 21 is fine. That's probably because I am using 20 messages per page, and the page split occurs between those two messages. I'm guessing that for those on 15 message per page, the page will be messed up until message 31. Great, you broke the forum. ![]() Please don't do that again. I went with using "rquote" for this reply, just to try it out. However, plain old "reply" was always fine with me. Jesus was a liberal hippie

Those who are seeing a "mess", what are you seeing, and what browser/version are you using. I'm not seeing any problems at either 15 or 20 messages per page using Safari.

Look at message 20 and see where huntards avatar is located as well as message numbering.
Also click on the link in nwr's message. FF 3.6.13 Tested with Opera and Chrome and Safari and no issues. All works fine there. Edited by jar, : No reason given. I took a screenshot of what I see in FF (messages set to 100 per page):
In IE, everything's fine

Quotes are implemented with tables, and it looks like Firefox has a nesting limit on tables. I eliminated a couple levels of quote, should be okay now.

My iPhone shows concentric squares (I guess they are empty quote boxes). It looks nothing like Huntard's screen shot.

It is okay now. Another reason to limit the number of nested quotes.

It looks fine now. Previously, title line for the post was halfway down, with Huntard's avatar above it. The column where the avatar and poster name normally appears was missing. Using firefox 3.6.13 on linux (opensuse). Jesus was a liberal hippie
