Why would they need to be reconciled?

Why reconcile?
Well, I reread the OP yet again and still see nothing in there that explains why they need to be reconciled. You point out that the stories contradict each other. Okay. But why do they need to be reconciled? Edited by jar, : fix subtitle.

Belief in the resurrection is irrelevant to the content of the stories and tales. The question in the OP seems to revolve around apparent contradictions in two versions of the tale. Whether or not you consider it a folk tale, the evidence certainly supports that designation. Like so many urban legends, what we find is a series of tales about the events that evolve over time. Whether or not the resurrection is a fact, the tales about the event did vary and did evolve and the different versions do often disagree.

Well, there were periods when Christians like many other minorities were persecuted, and when state religions were imposed, but for each such example there are examples of Christians doing the persecution.

But what if the people testifying were being inspired by a higher power? Why would this higher power inspire them to contradict each other? Inspiration is not dictation. "But what if the people testifying were being told what to say by a higher power?" Then it's likely the higher power told them not to sound like the testimony was rehearsed. The big question I still have not seen addressed is in Message 3. Why would they need to be reconciled?

I saw Message 28 but still see no explanation of why the passages need to be reconciled. Why is this any more of an issue then the added parts to Mark? Those that believe there are no contradictions will simply not see a contradiction.
