{Admin, I hope you don't think my two-questioned opening topic is too much. I'd really like to present both questions at the same time. In Coffee House.}
I found the scientific part of the recent thread, "Time traveler caught on film in 1920?" interesting. Continuing in a much less serious time-travel topic . . . I generally enjoy time-travel movies. I don't have a problem suspending my skeptical beliefs if there are no glaring loopholes. Some time-travel films I especially like are: a. "Planet of the Apes" original (it's always about primates with me, isn't it?). b. "Time After Time", I always enjoy "the moment" when the character (in this example, Malcolm McDowell) first appears in another time and he/she is momentarily culture-shocked. Star Trek IV — The Voyage Home has some of these moments (Spock on the metro bus). A pity Tom Hank's "Cast Away" movie didn't include these moments when he first gets back to civilization, although this really wasn't a time travel movie and he was only "gone" for a few years.) c. "The Final Countdown". Really liked it, except the ending was a complete cop-out. (Why couldn't they show the lone US carrier take down the entire military army of WWII's Japan) d. "Christmas Carol" 1951, with Alastair Sim. 1. Perhaps there are some really good time travel movies (including Euro-flicks) that I am unaware of. Forum participants, please name your favorite time travel movie. Please include a sentence or two why, or possibly with a critical thought (what could they have done better? Illogical premises? Loopholes?). But give spoiler alerts when applicable. As a related follow-up question, if you could, what time-period/place would you travel to? These thoughts pop up in my head right now: a. I don't know how to describe where (currently western USA?), but during the Cretaceous Period, to see dinosaurs. A T-rex or two would do. b. Cuzco, Peru, before 1500s, BEFORE Spanish conquistadors arrived. c. N. America, 1930's to see the Three Stooges vaudeville act. d. Roman Empire during Caligula's time (30 AD?) to "witness" a real Roman orgy. (Keep in mind that language is fluid in time, so the word "witness" MAY mean something other than today's definition. ) 2. Forum participants, please state your most wished-for time-travel experience. Edited by dronester, : clarity/brevity Edited by dronester, : No reason given.

As a related follow-up question, if you could, what time-period/place would you travel to? I would want to travel to the future. Perhaps a million or so years. I'm kind of a tech geek, so I am more interested in what we will do than what we have done. The cool thing about this sort of time travel is that it could be possible. "The Worthing Saga" by Orson Scott Card is a collection of short stories, one of which talks about a society where people are cryogenically stored and then woken up at certain intervals. Sounded cool to me.

I would want to travel to the future As a history buff, I am more interested in the past. But you piqued my curosity. 1. A million years in the future? I would bet the Earth would be a rather dark cinder by then. I don't have much faith in mankind. Take another look at my present avatar. 2. But maybe a hundred years into the future would be an eyeful. Imagine the medical advances? Imagine how we eventually solved world over-population, war, energy needs, religious nonsense. Or not. 3. I am curious, what percent of the responders to this thread would choose to travel to the future and what percent to the past? I don't know of "The Worthing Saga". Sounds like "Alien" or "Planet of the Apes" because of the cryogenically stored part. Unfortunately, I am a big reader of nearly everything, except novels.

I'm already traveling to the future and as for the past, been there, done that.

I'm already traveling to the future and as for the past, been there, done that. Interesting thought. I guess we are all traveling into the future. It just SEEMS like some of us may be stuck in the bronze age.

1. A million years in the future? I would bet the Earth would be a rather dark cinder by then. I don't have much faith in mankind. Take another look at my present avatar. Interesting take. Perhaps futurists are optimists while historians are pessimists? I say a million because if we continue on our current trajectory we should have the answers to all of the big fantasies I tend to enjoy. Is faster than light travel doable? Can we download our consciousness into digital form? I doubt we will have the technology to build lightsabers in the next 100 years, so why go there?
2. But maybe a hundred years into the future would be an eyeful. Imagine the medical advances? Imagine how we eventually solved world over-population, war, energy needs, religious nonsense. Or not. Medical, shmedical. What good is it to be old and healthy if there isn't anything cool to do? I would rather live to be 50 years old and travel the galaxy than live to 200 and drive around Arizona. Perhaps the question of the past vs. future is really pointing to some deeper philosophy. Us futurists think that the present is missing something that can be found through new horizons. Those who want to travel to the past may think that we have lost something along the way, that what we are missing can be found in the past. Who knows.

My girlfriend had me watch The Time Traveler's Wife with her.
The Time Traveler's Wife (2009) - IMDb I actually enjoyed it, for a chick flick. It was all twisted up with wierd and wacky things happening. He didn't want to knock her up so she banged his younger self from the past while he was visiting her in the future. And she was all: "it ain't cheating 'cause it was you". It got intense at the end because he knew he was going to get shot dead soon, but not exactly how it was gonna go down. It was worth watching. ABE: I would definately go to the future before I went to the past. The technology would be intriguing. Edited by Catholic Scientist, : No reason given.

These would require first the technological ability to use them and the industrial capacity to produce them. Which in turn requires the education and knowledge, not to mention the pratical equipment, to use and produce those technologies.
denounce all gods and proclame my self as the one and only god who does not want to be worshiped and who wants you to follow all laws
Or you could just demonstrate that following the laws is good for the people. Making them want to do it results in them actually doing it more often than simply ordering it.Declaring yourself the one true god is entirely unnecessary in any case. stop the overpopulation of the planet before it begins using simmilar methods china uses to keep the population somewhere arround 1 billion
Or you could teach people why overpopulation is a bad thing using realistic examples from the present. Once again, telling them to do/not to do it isn't enough; what happens once you die? they'll go back to doing what they want. You have to show the people why to do something; telling them what to do doesn't work, as most of history can attest.

Not trying to turn this topic into something more serious, but I gotta respond to some of what you said.

Telling them what to do may not always work, but it sure works better than explaining it to them. Those of us who have tried to reason with human breeders know this all too well. They are dirt poor, they can't even provide the most basic necessities to their children, and yet they continue to breed. It's like breeding is the most important part of their lives. Not only that, they are all too proud of it. They will brag and brag and brag while their children are in rags. Added by edit. I see that you are in New Zealand. As I understand it, New Zealand doesn't have some of the problems we have up here. My job requires me to regularly be in contact with 2nd and 3rd generation wellfare people. Almost all are overweight and obese. Almost all have more children than they can handle. Almost all have bad teeth. And even though their kids are overweight, they also have baggy eyes. You can tell they are getting the wrong kinds of food. They live and thrive on emotion rather than logic and reason. And in the mean time they continue to breed and brag about breeding. But god forbids if we even suggest that perhaps their lives would improve if they were to focus on something else more productive than breeding. We're one big happy politically correct family up here. And to suggest such a thing would make you look like a damn nazi. Edited by Taz, : No reason given.

I remember the Cliff Robertson-Yvette Mimieux movie back in the 60's and still think that movie was very flawed. The Time Machine by H.G.Wells should have been done better. But - damn - it was required viewing back when I was a kid (if not only for Yvette's Weena). A very lovely miniature Time Machine on the table for his guests disappears, with crimped cigar, into the future in a very well-done scene, I think. My problem was they way they made the Morlocks fatugly, instead of the lithe, swiftly moving, smaller in stature, night creatures of much more intelligence.
Face it, though - this was the original defining story. H.G.Wells. Another movie I'd like to see them make is "In His Own Bootstraps". Talk about circularity of paradoxical conundrums! Can't find my copy right now. Robert Heinlein. post note: Some time ago I had the opportunity to sing some of my own songs on the Leominster cable access TV station in a program with the mayor of Leominster. When I got up to the studio, much to my astonishment, over to the side, roped off from the public, there was a fullscale replica of the Time Machine used in the Robertson-Mimieux movie!! When nobody was paying attention, of course I climbed up on the saddle and sat in it, gripping the controls. Still a kid, yunno. - xongsmith, 5.7d

It wasn't cliff Robertson, it was Rod Taylor.
When did they have the full scale model in Leominster? I would have liked to have seen it I live in Leomister.
