Author | Topic: UK comedy, what to call it? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
onifre Member (Idle past 2980 days) Posts: 4854 From: Dark Side of the Moon Joined: |
Ok, I sorta need some help or advise from the folks in the UK - others may chime in but, this is specifically for the UK and/or members from Europe.
As some of you may know, a few comics and I are planning a tour of Europe, mostly the UK, but possible other areas. We currently need an angle for it. We are 3 comics, black, white, and me the spic. However, neither of us is stereotypical, as in, none of us represents our race in the stereotypical way - or, in the way the UK may imagine we act like. The black comics is not urban, the white comic has bad credit and is broke, and I don't look or act hispanic at all. These are us: Al Jackson, Forrest Shaw, Oni Perez. So... how would we sell ourselves to the UK, and what do we call ourselves? Names we have are these: 1) Black, White and Other2) Not So Streotypical 3) The New America 4) Politically Benign 5) America's Underachievers I'm whatever on these name's, nothing other than Not So Streotypical and Politically Benign are names I like. Also, how do we market? What would the UK appreciate hearing from US comics, or for what reason would they come see US comics? But basically, we're looking for a catchy name that would appeal to a UK audience but with a US angle. Any idea or suggestion would help. Thanks, - Oni
PS. - These 3 Fags was already suggested and rejected.

From a London perspective I think you are focusing too much on the stereotypes. That's what I figured. i didn't think race would be any kind of insentive.
Unless you explicitly drove the point home. Which none of us do, hence the one name "Not so Streotypical." But I'd personally like to steer clear of any race mention.
London is about as multi-cultural as it comes in world terms. But frankly so is most of the UK in terms of places you are likely to actually play? NYC and LA, yes. Maybe Austin, TX and Atlanta, GA also. Other than that, no. Just white, black, hispanic for most of the rest.
What is your UK itinery? None yet but obviously London will be one of them. We're going to be shopping around with bookers in the next coming weeks. Another concern is our actual promo-kit and the video clips we use... Would a UK audience like to hear more about US celebrity news, war, American politics??? Obviously each comics has his personal material that is unique to him, I do stuff about divorce, raising two daughters, being single with kids, drugs, etc. Al Jackson used to be a public school teacher so he has stuff about that, and Forrest is big into environmental stuff so he has that. That material I feel will translate well, but for the other stuff - is American pop cutlure, news, politics well known in the UK?
Anyway - When you here? I am gonna come to a gig cent London and get you/me very fuckin drunk indeed. I work in central Lon and live not far away at all. You and a few others will be contacted by PM when I have the dates my friend. - Oni Edited by onifre, : No reason given.

The Star Spangled Wankers springs to mind...... Actually, that's not bad for t-shirts. Seriously... would it sell? - Oni

Cool Oni, you just have to visit The Netherlands (strongest pot you can get, and great beers too, well in the south anyway ). Dude, that's my Mecca. I will definitely be going through there. For comedy purposes, how's American slang understood there?
I like number 5, I'd go with that one. You could build a show about how America is always bragging about being so great, but they are actually underachieving when compared to the rest of the world. This is good point and an angle we thought about. Larni gave me the suggestion, "America's Least Wanted"... I liked it too. Most of us do material on how shtty and unsuccessful we were at school (even though Al is a Brown University graduate - Ivy League)...but still. It's an angle we can sell easy with our material and it will be believable. Thanks for your thoughts, Huntard. - Oni

The Yankee Doodle Dandy comedy tour, featuring the Yankee (Forrest Shaw), Doodle (Al Jackson), and Dandy (the spic, I mean, Oni Perez). Not bad, not bad.
The crowd will understand what that means, and it would help if you added a lot of self-depricating humor about the United States in front of your European audience. Yeah, I don't think we would so much insult the US, cause all 3 of us are cocky and arrogant, some-what, especially me. And fuck the UK, they're no better than us, so we won't fag-out and placate to a international audience. But we will point out how each country sucks in its own way, and is hypocritical. Obviously mostly US stuff cause that's what we're familiar with, but the UK will get a little too.
I would also suggest some costumes reminiscent of 18th century clothing. How 'bout you let us borrow that sexy Coast Guard jacket? - Oni

EDGY? -> Fergie and her sexcapades? Yeah, definitely want to look into UK scandals. And all those topics you suggest are topics we cover, except for Obama's birth certificate, but that is an easy write.
What's up with americans and Tea Parties? This is something that I'm hoping they're familiar with - tea party stuff, Glenn Beck, Fox News. If they are then we're set for that type of material.
The difference betwen the US and the UK. In the UK if you have a psychic onstage he gets booed, in the US....(he becomes an economist? a right-wing radio host? etc.) True. Thanks for the input. - Oni

"American Werewolves in London!" I like that for a t-shirt also.
I'll edit this post and update if I can come up with more. Thanks dude. - Oni

Well, I'd like to think I know it well enough (perhaps you could give some examples?), Not sure about the rest of the country though. My friends know it, but I don't know how well they speak it up north. English isn't a problem for almost any Dutchmen, but slang words, I don't know, I'll ask around a bit. Let me not get you confused, I don't mean like street slang or anything like that. Nothing too urban or hip-hop'ish. I think I meant more in our common words that we may say one way and you guys another. Words or phrases like, cigs, hot chick, I'm bagging her, this is cool as shit, hit the club... stuff like that. I'm hoping that one of the draws to watch US performers is to listen to them speak as Americans would. maybe? lol - Oni

I don't know if you've heard of Geert Wilders, This is perfect. We'll definitely need to familiarize ourselves with your scandals and political issues. Funny how Wilders resembles a lot of the right-wing nut jobs here in the US. It would be simple to write material about him since we do so for our lunatics. Lol Thanks Hunatrd, keep it coming. - Oni

Perhaps banging ? Yes, I should learn to spell.
Bear in mind that a lot of American shows are broadcast here, most people know English pretty fucking well, and I don't think you'll egt someone who doesn't speak a word of English to go to a show of American comedians. If it's not too "slangish" I think everything will catch on pretty well. If they don't know a particular word, I'm sure they'll pick it up from the context. Word. That's what I was hoping for. Just out of curiousity, 'cause the booker over there will pretty much handle pitching our stuff to the clubs they see we'll fit in best. But what countires would not receive us well? Language wise, or maybe they just hate Americans. - Oni

Of the suggestions so far I'd favor Star Spangled Wankers or America's Least Wanted, probably the latter. Me too. Star Spangled... I'd like for t-shirts.
Call yourselves Charlie's Frightened Yak, who cares? A booker cares. For the simple reason that they see the audience like TV sees us, groups of people with common interests. Names like "Blue Collar..." are specific to gather the masses via catchy names and shit like that. Plus three asshole from America with no name recognition isn't going to put asses in seats. - Oni

Hope this offers some launch pads. This was great stuff, Larni. That's what I was looking for. The material I do that fits what you describe only goers over well in NYC, but I got a shitload of it so I can use it with the brits. Thanks, friend. - Oni

You can say "fuck" on television here without getting bleeped, yes, on prime time. Fuck I forgot about that. So maybe Three American Assholes might work. - Oni
