Re: Independent confirmation
Does IE 6.0 not handle .png's? .png's are the only way I can get clean rendering. .gif's can't handle it with good resolution, apparently because they don't possess a native alpha (transparency) layer.
IE *is* up to 8.0 now, perhaps it's time?

Re: Updated Latex Rendering
Oh, wow, you give me far too much credit. That equation is Cavediver's contribution. Of course, in all modesty I must confess that once I saw the equation I immediately recognized it as a 12-dimensional string theory equation that represents how squigglies beat parentheses.

LaTeX More Powerful Than I Thought
I've just discovered you can do things like this using Latex:
Does anyone know of a concise but complete source of documentation for Latex that is on-line?

I replied to your message because it was the last in the chain. I know you're not an IE stick-in-the-mud and a late adopter.

Re: Independent confirmation
That's correct. IE6 famously can't do .pngs.

Re: Updated Latex Rendering
You missed my point. I was asking how long it took to format the equation in latex? with my typing it would have taken between 15 & 30 minutes.
abe (This also explains why I ave edits to most of my posts : I am the wrlds woist typissht'))

Re: Independent confirmation
I work in a Big Business. In order to upgrade from IE 5 took several years of planning and meetings and test cycles and business analyses and consulting and more testing followed by a carefully planned rollout strategies (which were of course, all studiously ignored in the end).
Having just begun the rollout phase to get onto Microsoft XP, I expect we'll see IE8 in about 2020.

Re: Independent confirmation
IE 6 can invoke AlphaImageLoader to load png's. What a fascinating challenge it would be for someone to implement code for the board software that would detect IE 6 and use the AlphaImageLoader!

Re: Independent confirmation
I would love to use anything other than IE6 here at work, but that's not my decision. Our IT department was stopped from upgrading even our Office versions until it became a hindrance to actual business activities. (The field had upgraded and we were getting .xlsx spreadsheets that we couldn't open.)
Somehow, I doubt they'll upgrade IE just so I can view equations on an EvC message board while I'm supposed to be doing actual work.

Re: Independent confirmation
Just brought up IE 6 to see what you guys are dealing with. It's not that bad, the dots are kind of pretty.
So you guys who work for Big Brother, are you blocked if you try to download FF, Chrome or Safari? If you can download them then you could still use IE for all work related websites.

Not far off normal typing speed. Once you know TeX you can type it out about as quickly as you can think it - sometimes you have to go back and refine things but it's designed to give you the most natural looking mathematics from the start. The example I gave is pathetically trivial.

Unfortunately, being as I work for a big financial - allowing us to install programs would be too big a security risk. I managed to work around their security once, but they closed that loophole and even trying to install third party applications results in pointed questions.
To date - they haven't figured out that I can ftp using the cmd.exe. However - I'm going to lose that ability soon since they are migrating us onto an even more restrictive setup of XP on which I don't even have read access for the local hard drive or desktop files!

Re: Independent confirmation
I'm in a similar situation. EVen when my computer pops up with "Updates are ready to be installed for such and such a program" I can't click to install them since I don't have admin access to the computer.
I did, somehow, manage to install FIrefox on my computer, as IE will sometimes freeze and if I need to get to the page in question, Firefox will suually have no problem, so I suppose I can use that to log into EvC, but I definitely can't use it by default, otherwise someone may notice and {poof} there it goes.
