Macrophages and kin selection
I must admit, AIG, that your excellent post does not make me feel any better about the microbiology of my macrobiology. Now you've got me feeling like Sharon Tate after she invited Charlie Manson over for dinner.
So, in evolutionary terms, a species that possesses a hyper-reactive immune system is more likely to survive - be more fit - than one with a 'Hippocratic' immune system.
So, whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger? Probably true.
The bottom line here, Fearless, is that you should stop critiquing your macrophages. You are being sacrificed for the good of all mankind.
Well, I'm not going down without a fight. I don't want to be another victim of kin selection.
