Depending on leanness and breed, of course.
I know that bears are highly strong ounce per ounce, but i was wondering
1. how strong they are ounce per ounce
and 2, why are they so strong for their weights?
oh yes and, what are some feats of strength they are capable of?
are they the strongest mammals ounce per ounce?

Strongest mammals?
are they the strongest mammals ounce per ounce?
Doubt it. The cube/square law suggests that very tiny mammals are very much stronger per unit of weight.
Don't know which one would be the strongest though.

Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

Re: Strongest mammals?
Mustelids are pretty strong.
But surely Mighty Mouse is the strongest.

1. how strong they are ounce per ounce
Depends on the last time they bathed ...
I'd too would go with small (shrews etc) as proportionally they need less mass just to exist, but need to eat often.
Enjoy.

I found this on Yahoo! Answers.
Yahoo! Amswers writes:
pound per pound it is the golden moles. Their are more than one species but they are all VERY strong. A 2 ounce mole has been recorded as moving a brick in excess of 6 pound off its cage and escaping. Along with the brick it also had to lift the lid of the container which weighed in at 8 ounces. So that would be 43 times its own weight.
Why so strong? Two reasons: First, unlike true moles they have a set to their fur and can not reverse. They get stuck, sort of like when a kid sticks his head between two bars and can not pull it back out because their ears get in the way (they lay flat going in but hang coming out). To turn around they have to somersault inside the tunnel. If they can not somersault they must force their way forward. Second one species does not even live in a tunnel since the sand it lives in collapses as it tunnels. Therefore it literally tunnels and 'swims' through a sea of sand. It takes a LOT of strength for either.

I like the sound of this mole. Using brute force to solve a problem is often frownd upon; seems to work for the Golden Mole, though.

Bruteforce

Brute force has always been a great way to deal with problems.

Grizzlee
Hello Mr Naturalist (a play on "Mr Natural" of those oversexed Crumb comics?).
1. I do not think that anyone could tell you exactly how strong a bear is ounce for ounce, but there are some ways to show bear strength.
They are far stronger than canines or cats of similar weight, using their power for attack and defense ("Bears" by Ian Sterling, pages 50-52, 61).
Why are they so strong? Because of the way they are built; Short, stiff back, heavy paws, Huge limbs with muscles thick throughout(cats and dogsleg muscles taper down nearer the paw), and plantigrade paws (back ones fully plantigrade, front ones semi-plantigrade.) All these together makes for an impressive tank of a beast.
And no, bears weight for weight would not be the strongest of mammals; due to squared cube law and the way muscles work, tiny mammals win. Badgers and wolverines would be far stronger than any bear (save maybe for cubs of equal size. Bear cubs are surprisingly strong).
What can bears do with their strength? They can smash the back of a Bull, Bull Moose, Elk, and perhaps a Bison with one blow of its paw. They can use their arms to knock bulls down with one blow, as well as grab the Bull's horns andtwist the neck, breaking it. They can turn the head of an elk into a spash of gore with one paw swipe, and can fell cows and (according to some) decapitate horses with a paw swipe. They can lift horses right off the ground and slam them, kill and drago out Beluga whales three times their weight, carry a nearly one ton dead bull moose with ease, move boulders, dig massive holes in the ground, snap caibou necks with a good bite, break bamboo with their arms and then eat it(Giant Pandas and Asian Black bears), and kill both canines and big cats.
Being built for strength, they are not as efficient as predators as big cats (especially the Tiger).
Hope this helps
and if anybody asks for sources to all of this; i may give some, but there is so little time to do so (school and all), so I will do what i can. I wont promise though. Such info you can find on the net or in books about bears.
