Everyone seems to be stocking up on tattoos(at least here in the US). The last NBA game I watched, it seemed like I was watching a tattoo exhibition as well as a sporting event. Kids right out of high school are piling them on. It seems guys like to wear them up-and-down the arms and the ladies on the legs and back. Some of them look pretty cool I guess, especially on the ladies posterior and navel area.
It seems like even professionals are going for the fad. My fiance, who is also a child-welfare attorney, has one on her ankle and is thinking of getting a large ying-yang symbol on her back.
Everyone has their own tastes and I understand tattoos will always have a following, but the latest interest seems to be a fashion fad of sorts and I was wondering what these folks will be doing when the fad diminishes or goes out of style? It's not like you can just change out of them into the latest fashion trend.
When I see a gorgeous looking lady walking around with tattoos all over her body, I think, that looks sexy now, but when you are 50 years old and a bit wrinkled, and walking around with all that ink, aren't you gonna look a little silly?
What's your opinion? Are some people going overboard with the tattoos or am I getting old?

I agree completely, so you can't be getting old. When every other girl in my high school had a tramp stamp I knew tattoos had gone overboard.
Not to say I don't like tattoos, I myself plan on getting quite a few, but when people are just getting them because they "look cool" then they've done nothing but cheapen the act of getting one.

That's very good to hear
I think when the tattoo craze goes out of style with the mainstream, many folks might regret the decision to go overboard with plastering their body in highly visibile places.

I believe the proper terminology is "tramp stamp."
Everyone has their own tastes and I understand tattoos will always have a following, but the latest interest seems to be a fashion fad of sorts and I was wondering what these folks will be doing when the fad diminishes or goes out of style? It's not like you can just change out of them into the latest fashion trend.
If anyone is getting tattoos because they're faddish, then they're probably a bunch of poseurs who don't need to be getting them in the first place. You can always tell the kind too, staring at the wall in the shop and pointing to one they want.
Lame *thumbs down*
No self-respecting tattoo connoisseur would ever dare point to a wall for their tattoo, as it's sacrilege.
When I see a gorgeous looking lady walking around with tattoos all over her body, I think, that looks sexy now, but when you are 50 years old and a bit wrinkled, and walking around with all that ink, aren't you gonna look a little silly?
Who cares? You're gonna look silly 50 years from now regardless. Might as well as be inked up with full sleeves.
What's your opinion? Are some people going overboard with the tattoos or am I getting old?
I think your observation in this instance was astute. Tattoos have definitely come a long way in just 10 years, never mind the previous hundreds of years. When I got my first ink, my mother of course flipped out. And every subsequent tattoo to follow was the end of the world. Only sailors, bikers, and criminals had tattoos in her day. But since that time she has seen a lot of social changes take place. She is a lot more tolerant of my ink now.
Are people going overboard? Depends on the person I would say. Why are they doing it? What does the tattoo symbolize? Does it symbolize a drunken night in downtown wherever or does it represent something very meaningful to the one who adorns it?
I have some friends who filled up on ink within three years time. I think it's a bad idea. First of all, getting tatted up is not the goal, is it? You don't just get tattoos for the sake of getting tattoos... At least in my mind. I have friends that filled their body by the time they were 22 years old, where they generally haven't even established a world view yet.
But ultimately it boils down to the one who commits to it. It's their choice, and if they regret it, then I guess they didn't think long and hard about it.
Interesting topic... Don't think we've had this one yet, so far as I know.

What do tattoos measure?
Isn't a tattoo a measure of one's insecurity about her or hers natural appearance?

It certainly can be.
