Most p.d.a.s make me uncomfortable.
Male kissing female... yuck, I don't wanna see that. Get a room.
Male kissing male... ew, could you maybe go somewhere else and do that?
Female kissing female...
...
well, like I said, most p.d.a.s make me uncomfortable.

On Dark Angel
On the television show Dark Angel, the character Max is friends with a homosexual named Original Cindy. Both females, temptation for Cindy, right? But the show doesn't stress that. Max is at ease with her friend and they never get into the hanky panky of it. Max still dates boys and they both have guy acquaintances. The fact that Cindy is a homosexual looking for dates, doesn't make the relationship she has with her friend awkward although you can feel everyone on the edge of their seat when the two friends embrace fondly or use typical female gestures of affection.
This is great to see because it makes me think that girls can still be girls around someone with an alternate sexual preference. I'd like to see more "normal" behaviors even if the declared homosexual isn't dating, doesn't prefer any woman over her friend, and neither of the parties feels infringed on - yet.

you'll get used to it...i think
well, for me its something I just got used to seing. I was once a fundie and even when I realized I was an atheist I was still disturbed when I witnessed public displays of affection between same sex couples. In time I made good friendships with both gay guys and girls. I not only got used to they public displays with their partners but also to they way they spoke about their relationships when things got rocky for them. At first it freaked me out but then I realized that relationships are all the same and face very similar issues whether gay or straight. I also learned that love is love and it does not depend on a "right" set of genitals. I found that to be a humbling experience at the time and I have learned a lot from really getting to know gay people. maybe that's what you need; a gay or lesbian friend that will help you better understand these things.

All about attraction / empathy
Could it have anything to do with your personal attraction?
I mean, the stereotype of hetero men who love to watch girls kissing is well known. I have had discussion with some women to admit to actually finding it attractive when two men show various levels of affection toward each other.
I know I personally get kind of grossed out if I ever see a older guy with his trophy wife doing anything more than holding hands.
To me, the simple explanation is if it would be uncomfortable for you to do, you will probably find it uncomfortable to watch. We are biologically and culturally conditioned to have empathy for other people. Keep those mirror neurons firing!

It's about whether displays of affection between homosexuals make you uncomfortable at all.
I think any exorbitant amount of public affection tends to make people a little uncomfortable.

PDAs

I'm not sure Taz, but I think they're referring to "Public Displays of Affection".

It's just that there is a double standard where straight couples can almost have sex right out in public and nobody would mind but if a gay couple even hold hands then they'd be told to "cover up".
Well I would mind! These darn couples need to get a room!

Re: Affection, Passion, and Lust.
Not to go to off-topic, but is it actually unusual for people to kiss in public in America? Surely people kissing in parks or on the street is totally standard.
Sure, couples will kiss in public, but the difference we are talking about is having two people with their tongues down each others throat. I mean, I've never been where you live, but I would be surprised if it was not considered slightly taboo to be sucking face two feet away from the next passenger on the train.
It's just... rude... or if not rude, tacky.
Well, I've just spent thirty minutes trying to find footage of a hidden camera show that shows how everyone surrounding the couple feels awkward, but I'm having no luck. If any one else could track something down, that'd be cool.

Well sucking faces on a train would not be accepted, but that's a bit of an extreme example. What I should say is that where I live "french kissing" for a medium period of time on the street is accepted.
This reminds me of how there isn't any topless sunbathing in the United States. It's another thing that doesn't cause a bat of an eyelid in a lot of European countries but is considered vulgar (illegal?) in the U.S.

Well, yes, I suppose it is as well in the states. I suppose it really depends upon where you are at. If a couple is in a park and they are fawning and doting on one another, or french kissing, no one takes much notice. But if you were in an elevator and just start making out, I think it would tend to either annoy or embarrass some of the passengers.
This reminds me of how there isn't any topless sunbathing in the United States. It's another thing that doesn't cause a bat of an eyelid in a lot of European countries but is considered vulgar (illegal?) in the U.S.
Well, I'm from Miami Beach originally, and it is not taboo there. Not one bats an eyelash there either. There are also specific nude beaches in the San Diego area as well, but it isn't like Miami where it is common. However, comparatively to most everywhere else in the States, yes, it is not only uncommon, but illegal in most cases.
Well, come to think of it, there is of course the Spring Break locations (South Padre island, TX - Daytona Beach, FL - Lake Havasu, AZ - etcetera) where local law enforcement will turn a blind eye to the sheer carnality, if only for a week or so.
I guess in the final analysis, public displays of affection are either tolerated or looked down upon depending on the location and the level of passion being exhibited.

I often forget the U.S. is like fifty mini-countries joined together, I accidently think of the states like counties or provinces, where as they really have a lot more independance than that.
Although may I ask how similar Miami beach is to the European situation? Are the topless women mothers and grandmothers with the children, like in Europe, or only young women in their 20s and 30s? That would give me an indication of how accepted it actually is.

That would depend on their self-image. I would say that, in general, only fit and attractive women would dare go traipsing around in nothing.
