if they eat more protein in a day, it's because we're not taking care of the people, not that the pets are a menace.

someone ask me yesterday at the vets if they had dogs for adoption. i said no, but they had cats. and spent the next several minutes explaining that cats are better for small children. they're generally not so excitable; they're stringy and flexible and deal better with being manhandled; they don't jump on you; they're quiet; they don't need to be walked.
it's really very simple.

Sorry to hear about the kidney failure of Hiss. We lost a cat 7 years back (he was 13, same age as me), Genghis, who we had to put down to due his kidney failure.
Genghis kind of looked like Hiss does, except no orange that I can recall.

Hiss - C.1992-February 2, 2008. She died this morning, peacefully in bed in my arms. It was time, and it couldn't have happened in a better way. Moose

Toes? What the heck do toes have to do with cats? I thought they had claws!~~~To Jon.
To Moose: Hiss had a good life, Moose. The fact that many humans love animals shows that we surely must have more good than bad in us...and the fact that animals love us is just downright warm! Edited by Phat, : added Hiss RIP

No better way to go...my heart goes out to you, even though we probably haven't ever conversed here.
I am very much a cat person (although I love dogs as well) and I have lost many good feline friends. This one looks like she had a very vivacious personality (and/or you just had a good shutter speed!!). "You are metaphysicians. You can prove anything by metaphysics; and having done so, every metaphysician can prove every other metaphysician wrong--to his own satisfaction. You are anarchists in the realm of thought. And you are mad cosmos-makers. Each of you dwells in a cosmos of his own making, created out of his own fancies and desires. You do not know the real world in which you live, and your thinking has no place in the real world except in so far as it is phenomena of mental aberration." -The Iron Heel by Jack London "Hazards exist that are not marked" - some bar in Chelsea

Sorry to hear that, Moose. It's always hard when you loose a friend.
Best wishes, Larni

I lost my beloved Josephine to kidney failure 4 years ago.
Losing Josephine was very hard for me. She was with me 15 years. I'm so sorry to hear that you lost Hiss.

Nothing in particular against cats; I think they are great companions and interesting pets, but dogs are hands-down a greater pet. Perhaps my ignorance speaks for itself, but I believe the credentials for dogs is incomparable.
Dogs assist with the seeing and hearing impaired, detect drugs and explosives, guard property and people, herd livestock, hunt and retrieve game, assist with law enforcement, assist with rescue teams, and are "trained to provide comfort and affection to hospitalized and institutionalized patients". Dogs even have the ability to detect cancer from our breath.http://news.nationalgeographic.com/...060112_dog_cancer.html Also, I saw a PBS special on dogs in which case a diabetic child had a dog that could detect when the childs blood sugar levels were low. The dog would leap on the parents bed, wake them, and the parents would administer the insulin. It was truly remarkable to witness this.

After loosing Hiss last February, I was down to 3 cats - Squeak and Teddy and Marvin.
Recently two 6 month old female sisters came down from the veterinary clinic branch office up the shore. The owner couldn't keep them, supposedly because they were not using the litter box in a rental property, or something like that. The owner couldn't get them into a local shelter, so they got brought down to the main office to be euthanised. We kept them at the clinic for about a week and were confident that they were indeed using the litter box. Well, the management offered me free spayings if I would adopt the two of them. I got them to also throw in the first years inoculations at cost, and I now have two more cats. They are "orange" medium haired cats, and looked pretty much alike. Except one was a little larger, had more white on the face, and had longer hair tufts coming out of her ears. And, get this, a Mohawk haircut! They had been named Lucy and Zoey, but I renamed them Punky and Spunky. There was considerable turmoil the first time I brought them home. A few days later they went back to the clinic for their spayings and the second return home resulted in a much less cranky situation. Things are working out fine. Which brings us to a cartoon I posted on the clinic's "humor" message board. Doing a search, it turns out it is currently on Andy Singer's home page. The gif itself is found here. Hope Andy doesn't mind too much - Here it is:
"Lucy catches Mike preparing for a difficult dental procedure" At the clinic, I added the above caption. Dr. Lucy and Dr. Mike are the wife/husband DVM's and owners of the clinic. Dr. Mike is also the areas dog and cat dentist. Other clinics send dental cases his way. quote: [I know, it's months later] As mentioned, a common mutation in cats is polydactyly. When I was an undergrad, a cat decided to use a friend's house to have her kittens and they kept one who had six toes. We named her "Dactylic Hexameter." Yeah, we're geeks. I had a cat who thought he was a dog. He chased his tail, he came when he was called, he played fetch. It's been seven years, and I still haven't quite been able to bring myself to adopt another pet since I don't know if I can go through the pain of losing another one like him. Rrhain Thank you for your submission to Science. Your paper was reviewed by a jury of seventh graders so that they could look for balance and to allow them to make up their own minds. We are sorry to say that they found your paper "bogus," specifically describing the section on the laboratory work "boring." We regret that we will be unable to publish your work at this time.
