David Lynch, John Hagelin and Transcendental Meditation
Has anyone seen or have any knowledge of TM? I recently saw on UCTV a speech from David Lynch, a leading neuroscientist (unfortunately, I can't remember this person's name), and John Hagelin, who is, to my limited understanding, one of the best public speakers I have ever heard.
It was an hour speech at the University of Washington. I am trying to dig it up now. However, I did find a small clip of DL and JH.
Has anyone heard of TM? If so, do you practice this? Is it efficacious?
The clip is here- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bC_hXwdCf-A
Thank you for your time.

David Lynch, a leading neuroscientist
David Lynch is a film maker. Not a neuroscientist.
TM is a load of horse manure. Typical pseudoscience religion a la Christian Science or Scientology.

Re: David Lynch, John Hagelin and Transcendental Meditation
Yes, I thought my phrasing would cause problems, but the speech I was referring to had (1) David Lynch- flim director, (2) a leading neuroscientist- name unknown, and, (3) John Hagelin.

Re: David Lynch, John Hagelin and Transcendental Meditation
Thank you, Molbiogirl, for the links. I was curious about TM but listless when it came to researching it; confirmation bias, I suppose, and lazy critical thinking.
A little embarassing, to say the least, but thank you.

What's with the 300 post limit? Aren't you thwarting discussion by putting a post limit to a thread?

From what I've heard, its a software issue.
Thwarting discussion would be better than the board crashing, don't you think?

As CS said its a software thing. As well once that thread closes you can propose a sequel thread for promotion and continue from where you left off.

The 300-post limit needs to be explained periodically. The original software used by this board would become very unreliable when a thread grew longer than around 300-400 posts. When this happened posts would be lost, and sometimes even entire threads, so we imposed the 300 post limit. It was then discovered that the limit was actually a benefit, as it imposed an endpoint on what would otherwise be an unending discussion. Sequel threads were and are common, but they provide an opportunity to refocus on the essential issues, or to modify the focus to what had been discovered to be the essential issues during discussion.
The new software has no such limitation, but we continue to find the 300-post limit very useful. Later this year the message database will be moving into MySQL, which should provide even greater reliability, as well as make possible the implementation of many new features. One feature would be setting the post limit of threads, and another would provide automatic notices as a thread approaches the limit.

Maybe it should be in the FAQ....

Got it. I've heard something along those lines before and that's pretty much what I meant by "software issues"

It doesn't bother me and I too think it is beneficial.

Weren't you talking about going to dBoard 3.0 sometime before? Did you decide on MySQL instead?
I've worked with MySQL a little {but I didn't really feel like learning a whole new language }. The available features are nice.
Might be able to improve the search function then, no? Or should we just use the "Google site:" search function?

Then whoever wrote the software must be an idiot.
