Narcicism
I think what I see with Cruise is the astonishing pride he has for himself. I'm not sure if I've seen anyone with a more self-congratulatory spirit about them.
That said, we all run the risk of this by forgetting one other critical virtue that we sometimes forget while trying to maintain the others -- humility.
To the other readers saying, big deal, what is the difference between his religion and other religions: Your point is well taken, however, there seems to be one critical aspect missing.
Most religions point away from the self and look to something else in which to improve the self. Cruise and Scientology looks at the self as if it is the answer for all of the major questions of life.

“There is something which unites magic and applied science while separating both from the 'wisdom' of earlier ages. For the wise men of old the cardinal problem had been how to conform the soul to objective reality, and the solution had been knowledge, self-discipline, and virtue. For magic and applied science alike the problem is how to subdue reality to the wishes of men: the solution is a technique; and both, in the practice of this technique, are ready to do things hitherto regarded as disgusting and impious" -C.S. Lewis

Re: Narcicism
So what? The practical outcome is the same, someone saying "my religion is the one with the answers".
But everyone thinks this irrespective of a religion or not. No one purposefully follows something they believe is wrong, rather, they follow it because they believe it is right.
Saying this is a trait only reserved for the religious is only begging the question.

Ah yes, when all else fails and you have no defense against an accurate charge, trot out the old Tu Quoque
A defense for what? What was I defending?
Its common sense, really. Since everyone follows some sort of lifestyle they believe leads to good things, everyone has these traits.

Re: Narcicism
But not everyone believes that theirs is the only correct lifestyle and that all other people should be converted to it or else.
Religions tend to make people think this way.
Well, there is this thing called the law of non-contradiction where two diametrically opposed viewpoints can't logically both be true.
The assumption invariably comes down to one of two things: Either people that recognize it are narrow-minded, or truth is a narrow path.

Re: Narcicism
Truth isn't "a" path.
What is Truth? -Pontius Pilate
Even Tom Cruise knows some truth. He recognizes that it's important to do things, to make a difference in this life.
Everybody knows that. Why is that astounding? The question always boils down to what kind of implementation.
