funding
science being funded by the goverment in the US has been bittersweet. the goverment only funds science that has a proven base and has not supported the exploration of theories that need funding to become "proven"
many of the greatest scientific discoveries were discovered through private funding.
im hopeing that the cuts from goverment funding might in some way bring about more private fundings. i beleive that physics is far from its potential in being properly understood and used for the betterment of mankind.
to solve funding , private investors need a place to go to offer their funding to scientist who are asking, by bringing awarness to a funder of the potentials of the science being explored.
private funding would also allow scientists to explore their science with less limitations.
thats my take anyways.

Re: funding
I see it now... adopt a subatomic particle. They are lost, they need your help. You get its name, what it looks like, and where it would fit into the standard model. Watch its progress as you send in money.
heheheh.

Re: funding
well. truthfully, orginizations have given away money for alot less lol
if its tax diductable, why not give charity money to science ? at least then the giver might feel that there makeing a difference in the human race, as opposed to flushing it to a "charity" that gives only 5% to the charity and pockets the rest.

Re: funding
I should have noted that I wasn't trying to criticize your idea. Actually I like it and think secular organizations could be making a push for such things.
Its just the comical vision of a little lepton with tearful eyes and Sally Struthers discussing its plight came to mind.

Re: funding
yeah i caught it, i thought it was funny
could such a place for scientists and investors to meet up gain media attention?
it would take some planning, but a site designed for that purpose could escalate scientific discovery. im not that web sauvy personally.

Leave it to fundie logic to suggest that cutting funding would be good for science.

for what it's worth...
to solve funding , private investors need a place to go to offer their funding to scientist who are asking, by bringing awarness to a funder of the potentials of the science being explored.

Donors Choose is one way to donate money to a science-type cause. It is science education projects rather than funding projects. Of course there is also projects like Galaxy Zoo, where you actually get involved in the project (there are too many galaxies for trained cosmologists to classify them all, it is still too difficult to get a computer to do it better than a layperson with a smattering of training...thus galaxy zoo).
There is also The Richard Dawkins Foundation or JREF. These are primarily educational based charities still.
It would be nice, I agree, if a way to pledge small donations towards less mainstream projects was possible and easy - but there are at least some things we can do at the moment

Galaxy Zoo
I'd like to give a bump to this thread where Modulous mentioned Galaxy Zoo a couple years ago. At this site laypeople can make meaningful contributions to cosmological research. Nothing beats a human being for rapid and accurate pattern recognition, and by bringing your eyes and your brain to their website you can help scientists develop a better understanding of why the universe is the way it is.
The link again: Galaxy Zoo
