Hello all!
quote:
I don't know about you, but some evolutionists ( or the ones
I know ) really shove it in your face when you go against them. They put all this crap up which is passed off as very
scientific and intelligent, and then when you disagree with it,
you're labelled ignorant, a liar, a hypocrite, and that you
don't belong in the science world.
They make themselves superior to creationists because they
know what genetic drift is, or natural selection, or puncuated
equilibrium. Well, I'd rather not be a believer of evolution if
I'm going to turn into an arrogant snob. ( Some do at least.)
Then they come up with that when you believe the Bible, you
are not thinking for yourself. Obviously you are, because every
one thinks, don't they? And how is evolution thinking for
yourself? [ sarcasm ]
Then they throw some ad hominem attacks ( some were
mentioned earlier ) at you. They nickpick all the little spelling
errors and grammatical errors, but, they probably do it them-
selves. Isn't that being hypocritical?
Why think that the creation of life was so difficult if if can
be easily explained in Genesis?
Look! Genesis can be proven!
It talks about the creation of the land, the oceans, the stars,
animals, man. I see all of it around me. There's evidence of
the Genesis creation story. Taadah!
Either people believe in evolution because it sounds so convincing because of it's advanced language, because they
won't be afraid of moral absolutes, or because they can show
off their amazing intelligence to creationists, because we
don't understand "science", and we are "ignorant".
*Note: This applies to some evolutionists . Don't worry, I won't say all, because then I will be labelled a stereotypical, prejudiced, ignorant overgeneralizer

They make themselves superior to creationists because they
know what genetic drift is, or natural selection, or puncuated
equilibrium.
It's too bad they come across sounding this way.
However, if you don't know what evolution is about then how can you possibly claim to be thinking about it?
If you know nothing (or little ) about a subject then why would you or anyone think your opinion about it means a darn thing?
Generally it gets annoying to hear people go on about evolution when everything they say demonstrates they know nothing about it.
Others have pointed out that if someone like myself started making statements about what Christianity says with things like, "Jesus says we should be cannibals, it says so in the bible!" you'd be some mix of amused, angry and frustrated. Well, I see exactly equivalently stupid, ignorant and direct statements made here regularly.
You'd be especially annoyed if someone kept saying it even when you'd pointed out that anything I used to support my nutty idea is not accepted by theologians and other experts anywhere at anytime.
If someone is ignorant of an area and is arrogant as well then they can probalby expect some fairly negative reactions. I'm not sure you can condemn those reacting that way under those circumstances.

Exactly. (And no, I haven't been posting at that site. )
I try to sound only as arrogant as my opponent. If my opponent acts like a know-it-all (ala FFGFollower) I'll get pretty hot. I'll be direct. You have to in order to have a chance of getting through.
If my opponent is self-effacing, polite, and well-mannered, I try to be, too. If they're all like "I don't know much, but I thought this might be a thorny problem for evolution", I try to be like "I don't know much either... here's perhaps a flaw in this argument."
I'd rather argue with the latter than the former. Sadly the internet does not trend towards civil behavior - or perhaps, words just seem more terse without the tone of voice behind them.
I'm no authority; I would never wittingly claim to be. But some creationist claims are so outrageous you don't have to have a degree to debunk them.
Sorry if I come off as an arrogant atheist. I like to think I'm just a serious atheist - I'm unwilling to entertain the existence of god without some proof. So I'm not willing to take the existence of god in an argument for granted. If you want to argue with me, and your position requires the existence of god (or an inerrant bible), that's something we'll have to argue about.
Just as you wouldn't let "Given that the sky is pink," go by without challenge, I challenge theism when it's presented before me as a given.

All too typical of the creationis attitude. Knowing the subject is just arrogance - of no relevance to actual debate at all....

Wasn't me.
As for the rest of your post, I really didn't expect this kind of knee-jerk reaction from you. Knowing a subject isn't arrogance; not knowing the subject yet still attempting to argue it, is.

Christian Forum
John, PaulK, Crash,
This wasn't me by the way, I actually copied and pasted this from the aforementioned forum, because I couldn't believe this would actually make sense to anybody.
I was following the FFG thread that Crash opened and went to the Christian forum that I think Percy gave. I must've read for half an hour or so, getting alternatively mad and sick.
I thought about registering on their site and arguing with them about this, but what's the point??!?
I guess I feel so frustrated about it that I just don't know what to do. At the same time, I thought you all might find it amusing, so I posted it -- with a laughing face.
Thank you all for your comments,
Geno

Re: Christian Forum
Sorry! I didn't mean to give you a "WHAAT?!?" moment. I just couldn't believe what I was reading, but then you've probably seen those same statements--in earnest--hundreds of times. I've only seen a few such discussions and, man, it's getting old already.

...Ooohhh. Now it comes into focus.
I'd point out, this is why we have both the UBB quote tags and the forum guideline about citing sources. So that other people's words aren't mistaken as your own.

From my personal experiences believing in god is a matter of faith. This is something most of everyone here hasn't experienced and that is why youre views of atheism are justified. Nobody will understand faith until they experience it for themselves. Our human ways make us say to ourselves Iwont believe it till i see it. This is natural because our mind is limited and finite and that is why when something that is strange hapens we tend to reject it. Faith is the total opposite to the human way. You first believe it and then you see it. For most of us this is absurd but this is the way god works. God says believe in me first and i'll take of your problems and all of youre life just believe. A human says, take care of my problems andthen i'll believe in You. Idont blame anyone for this cuase it happens to me all the time even being a christian. But fortunately i was brave enough to take the bet and came out the winner. Faith is real and it works you just have to Believe. I know im gonna get trashed for this but what can i say its my personal experience.

That, I think, is where you're wrong. Most of us atheists here come not from a tradition of atheism, but from a religious background.
I did the faith thing. I had faith in god. But christian church (as you do) says that if you have faith, god will make changes in your life - that faith leads to verifiable actions.
What I discovered is that my faith had nothing at all to do with what happened. Nothing I prayed for happened. God made no changes in my life. God did nothing for me.
I did believe in god. I really, really did. I believed in god so much I was a creationist, like you.
Faith is real and it works you just have to Believe.
It didn't work for me. I believed as strongly as I knew how. How do you explain that?
If faith is real, shouldn't it work for everyone?

I may be wrong, but I don't think you'll be trshed for this, because of these important words: I don't blame anyone for this. So often we hear those with a particular faith lambast others as deluded or blind or inadequate or just plain bad if they do not share that faith. Your liberal attitude appears, from this, to be quite different - I don't see you being trashed for it, unless by some who would prefer you to be more intolerant.
