One of the consequences of the 'holier than thou' phenomena it seems is dishonesty and cheating.

Does salvation promote the honesty and love that jesus advocated? Or does he simply provide the greatest of all excuses to lie, cheat, steal and do whatever it takes to advance oneself? We have seen this often here on EvC with the, 'for the good of their souls'. How do we respond to this? Believers and non-believers?

It reminds me of this.
Just as illogical people rate their logical skills very high, so people with no sense of right or wrong can manage to feel perfectly self-righteous.
In both cases it's because they can only compare their behavior with their own standards of logic or morality. No-one could erroneously believe that they could ride a bicycle, 'cos they'd notice that they kept falling off.
