I continue to notice a high frequency of spelling errors in some posts, and so I want to make people aware of some very powerful and easy to use spellcheckers available to work right in your own browser window.
Now go forth and typo no more! Edited by Admin, : Fix typos.

I hope that some have noticed the sudden reduction in spelling errors in my posts. The new firefox works great!
I've noticed for some time that I don't get any result from the home and end buttons in firefox on this site but do on others.

Anyone so limited as to be able to spell a word only one way is severely handicapped.

While someone's on the subject, I'll just mention what I think is the most common error on the Internet. It's (and sometimes its') when people really mean plain old its.
I think most people on EvC know the rules, and so the extra apostrophes are typos. But for the minority who aren't quite clear about it: Its is possessive, and requires no apostrophe as it can mean nothing else. It's means it is. It's common to read phrases like "the dog licked it's wounds", which is nonsensical! Trivia it may seem, but my other bitch is about people not capitalizing at the beginnings of sentences, because it makes it harder to tell when they've started a new one, and therefore difficult to read a whole block of text on screen. Anyone agree? (I'd better spellcheck this post now, having said all that).

I see there, their and they're misused a lot, as well as your and you're, and affect and effect.
The problem is that spellcheck isn't going to find these errors.
my other bitch is about people not capitalizing Sshhhh! Don't mention that. We don't need a whole 'nother thread on freakin' capitalization

We have been over this one before, and suffice it to say that the ones who don't capitalize sentences are a very eclectic and rebellious bunch!

hey, this is the internet, not english class. you don't like my spelling or grammar, get over it. keep you're opinions off my style! there just your opinions. its attitudes like this that effect everyone negatively, and its high time we gave such attitudes there comeuppance. if we don't do something about this, it's affect will be very bad. they're won't be any going back. theirs more at stake than you think!

Speaking of witch, the ancient hebrews didn't hvae capitalization, punctuation marks, spaces between words, and vowels, and they did pretty well.
thrfrwshldgtrdfllthsthngsfrthskfsmplst Disclaimer: Occasionally, owing to the deficiency of the English language, I have used he/him/his meaning he or she/him or her/his or her in order to avoid awkwardness of style. He, him, and his are not intended as exclusively masculine pronouns. They may refer to either sex or to both sexes![/size]

..the ancient hebrews... Ancient, but not dead. They still seem to be with us on this site, in more ways than one!

I have a program called "SpellCzech" but it doesn't recognize vowels.

Haven't you seen that email on the importance of spelling where all the words are spelled wrong except the first and last letter and you can still read it easily?
Someone knows what I'm talking about and can post it for you I hope. I don't have the text and had no success trying to google it.

Haven't you seen that email on the importance of spelling where all the words are spelled wrong except the first and last letter and you can still read it easily? No I haven't, but some years ago I saw an article on some research at Cambridge University which showed that same thing, and demonstrated that we read whole words rather than individual letters in order. However, like the missing capitals and Taz. Devil's missing vowels above, it sure slows you up, wcihh is the pniot, rlaley. Edited by bluegenes, : Typo

I've seen different incarnations of the idea you're talking about. Here's one:
quote: On the other hand:
quote: While you can puzzle out the second examplar, it certainly isn't easy reading. I suspect the phenomenon depends on the letters not being too mixed up and the wrods not bnieg too lnog. One problem with language is that English is, as anyone can sea, a very elusive tongue. When a gnu word or phrase comes along it is readily added two the body of language. English can be as light as heir or as heavy as led. It can be soft as flower sifted through your fingers. It often can be only understood when red in context and many associations can be maid as the language grows. Know one can really tell when something is knew or simply an adaptation of what others new already. It flows along like the see, wave upon wave two the end of Thyme. I wood wish that it was easier four the audience to understand but fore many it is like trying to see the trees threw the would or the flour in the meadow. When I wright I always try to make sure that the spelling is write, however bee four warned that I often make mistakes. Bear with me and and try to judge what is fare. Life is a slim read and bends in the wind; hear today, goon tomorrow.
