In the attempt to open a new thread: Should logic be observed? http://EvC Forum: Should logic be observed? -->EvC Forum: Should logic be observed? mike the wiz shows that he is the wiz (if ever if ever a wiz there was, I might add).
Though that may be nonsense... Mike's comments are not. And if more people here submitted to the laws presented, then many would not suffer at the hands of those who make comments like the following:
Ringo:
I posit nothing!
Mike the wiz:
Is it science? Is it part of science. Is it important? Did the likes of Darwin and Einstein observe such laws as the excluded middle?
The reason the excluded middle is important, IMHO, is because it applies to so many propositions. It's important, for starters, because it directly pertains to the law of non-contradiction.
The basis of any claim, if to be deduced as true or false, must obviously obey this formal law.
There are a few circumstances I can think of which ARE NOT to be confused with the law.
There is the pedantic proposal; An exception to bivalence.
A pink ship, in ten years, will sink in the Mersey.
This is an exception to the law, because it is neither true or false, at this stage.
Then there is the false dillemma.
Gordon is either fat or thin.
Again, this is the same as the compositional error. A contradiction is shown through the operator "NOT".
It would be correct to say that Gordon is either fat or not fat.
Other than this however, it's strikes me as logically practical to say that something cannot be true and false if it is in an elementally compositional capacity.
Thus if a ball is 100% red, it can never be not red.
All good science is based on sound logic. Therefore, I would ask Jar, and others, should logic be rejected? Or this law in particular? What would terms such as true, false, valid or sound then mean? If anything.
Examples of why I think the excluded middle is necessary;
You are either you or not you. Can you therefore be both?
I am either mortal or not mortal. Can I be both?
I either own a car or don't. Can it be both?
I have two eyeballs, or do not. Can it be both?
I am mike, or not. Can I be both?
For obvious reasons, in reality one can see the importance of establishing the truth or falsity of any proposition. Furthermore - any proposition could not be evaluated logically as true or false if there were no such law as the excluded middle. We can all see the genuine logical disjunctions in those few examples.
When I refer to "truth" I ONLY do so under formal logic. i.e. True, false, valid, sound.
In your opinion, I would like to know if I am talking nonsense. perhaps anyone with scientific knowledge can tell me if they understand where I'm coming from, I'd apreciate it. Do you also believe laws of logic are vital in order to find sound and unsound proposals?
You are not talking nonsense. It appears to be nonsense to those who do not understand what 'sense' is.
The laws you invoke are why Jesus said the following:
John 8:43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!
It is also explained here by the same Spirit, speaking through Paul:
1 Corinthians 2:14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
So mike... you must understand that you are speaking very clearly. So clearly, that it is too simple for them to hear. That which is the most basic and fundamental, is too deep for them. You are speaking so clearly, that it cannot be understood by those who muddy the waters of reason with desire that will not cohere with sound judgement.
The natural man thinks with his lusts (be they economic, sexual, power & control, etc..) and that is what makes sense to him.
Anything that threatens his will, dreams, or desires, simply cannot be true. To this man, there simply must be another explanation. And sure enough, the illogical explanations are flowing like wine from the cup of the queen.
It is cognitive dissonance (which we all suffer from time to time) ruling the individual roost with glee. It is the bliss of ignorance and the delighting of darkness.
Not only will the topic not be promoted and your questions addressed, but you will be ridiculed for thinking such nonsense. Since they do not comprehend it, it must be false. After all, they are the smartest among us...
Be careful mike, for in the most extreme cases (speaking PERFECTLY clearly), one is garanteed to have nails driven through his hands and feet.
It is absolutism crucifying absolutism... in an attempt to be freed from the chains of absolutism.
It is becoming what you falsely perceive is after you.
In otherwords (in case the point has not been made for those with difficulty in this area), it is the insanity and power of the spirit of the air that rules this earth. These prophets of suspicion, make sure that they are not pushed out of power by becoming the greatest moralizers on earth.
It is absolute justice delivered to others, so as to hide from absolute justice themselves.
It is the most stunning violation of the law of non-contradiction. It is man, worshipping the God who is made in his image...
It is mankind, posessed by himself.
mike the wiz:
Do you also believe laws of logic are vital in order to find sound and unsound proposals?
Absolutely!
I think it was Dr. Zacharius who said, 'Truth is essentially the quality of our propositions'.

Rob, if you want to discuss Mike's topic then the thing to do is to go to the Topic Proposal Issues thread and make a case for the topic to be promoted, not to start a further PNT based on the previous topic.
