i think the fact that humans are really stupid pack animals explains quite a lot about society as a whole. No, we're not. We're pack-animal wanna-be's, which is even worse. Trying to emulate the life-style without all the requisite instincts in place.
no one person can do much of anything, if you really think about it. and 90% of the people out there can't even use the technology we've got, let alone explain how it works or construct something like it themselves. Loved Asimov's take on that in the Foundation novels where the Foundation had started exporting technology as a religion. Say the right prayer and press the red button and it works.

My most controversial opinion, apparently, is I would like to see the death penalty reintroduced in the UK.
I think a murderer who planned and waited for their opportunity to slaughter an innocent adult or child doesn't deserve to live. I also think that the punishments handed out in UK courts frequently verge on the obscene. I often wonder why the criminal is better treated than the victim. Brian. Edited by Brian, : grammar

Your list are themselves worthy of a long debate. We should probably narrow them down because the thread will just get complicated if we don't. Its up to you, seeing as you're the OP.
I don't think O.J. did it. I think his oldest son did. I couldn't help but notice this one. You might be the only person on the planet that believes this. So, what kind of evidence exists to support such a lofty assertion? Faith is not a pathetic sentiment, but robust, vigorous confidence built on the fact that God is holy love. You cannot see Him just now, you cannot fully understand what He's doing, but you know that you know Him." -Oswald Chambers

I think Led Zeppelin was far superior to Black Sabbath. This may be controversial only at my house and probably of no interest to anyone under age 50.

I agree with you here, RB. "War Pigs" is the only possible competition with most all of Zep's work.

This isn't really an opinion, but it might be contraversial. I've never listened to "Stairway to Heaven" (other than little snippets here and there), nor do I intend to.

I also think that the punishments handed out in UK courts frequently verge on the obscene. I often wonder why the criminal is better treated than the victim. Indeed - punishment shouldn't really mean 'free room and board in a place much nicer than where you live with free facilities and socialising opportunities. Most of my opinions of controversial nature have already come up, but I'd like to add a corollary to yours. I think that the execution of the death penalty should be carried out by the closest victim (spouse or parent of murder victim for example).

As it stands, they don't seem to be doing either. Though both would be ideal.

quote: LOL. I agree! I have two cats and their behavior is many times more mature than that of the typical person I encounter. Especially people in groups. We do seem to become dumber in direct proportion to the number of people in our "pack". Which leads me to a new controversial opinion... People who hate cats feel threatened by them because they don't trust the feline's independent mind. I think it's because they themselves don't know or understand how to think independently. Greg P.

quote: Might depend on the particular crime, for example there's not much chance Ted Bundy or Gacy could have been rehabilitated. Many crimes of opportunity are the end result of a complex alignment of factors, and might be good targets for actual rehabilitation.

quote: To be honest I haven't really researched this to any great length but there are the "facts" and conclusions I drew from them that led me to believe his eldest son did it. 1) Blood matching O.J.s was found at the scene: I'm no biologist so I could be wrong but wouldn't O.J.'s son's blood be very likely to match his? 2) O.J. acted very "guilty" in the wake of the murderers: If it's true that he really didn't do it, only someone very close to him would cause O.J. to act the way he did. The only person I can think he'd be inclined to protect would be a family member. 3) O.J.'s eldest children (not by Nicole) didn't like her at all: Speaks for itself and my provide motive 4) The glove didn't fit: It's more likely that the glove simply wasn't on his hand than that it shrunk and all that other jazz. Perhaps that glove fits his son's hand? I'm not married to this opinion by any means. If we are going to discuss this much further I say go ahead and propose a new thread :-) Greg P.

I think physics, chemistry, and mathematics are "fake" sciences in that they do not study the natural world, but rather, study simplified mathematical models about it.arachnophilia writes:
Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are fake sciences? or rather, religions. mathematicians readily admit it's a religious idea, based on the faith in their initial axioms. And possibly religious? May I ask why and what exempts biology from this?I know you explained this to me before crashfrog, but the discussion got kind of cut off half way. Edited by Son Goku, : No reason given.

Indeed - punishment shouldn't really mean 'free room and board in a place much nicer than where you live with free facilities and socialising opportunities. My mate is a prison officer, and I am freequently lost for words at some of the things he tells me. Being in the UK you will appreciate some of these beauties It is a prisoner's right to see a doctor within 24 hours about any ailment. I know people who have had to wait about a fortnight to see a doc and they are law abiding citizens. A dentist visits the prison EVERY day to see if anyone requires treatment! I know people who cannot even get registered with a dentist! We have the smoking ban up here now and my mate cannot smoke inside the prison, but the cons can as it is deemed as their home. The prisoners take great joy at teasing the officers by sitting back in their cells puffing away on their ciggies. Prison should be a punishment, you wouldn't think it. Not just that, some prison sentences are a freakin joke. The Americans may be a weird lot, but at least their prison sentences seem to fit the crimes. Brian.
