Well, kinda. Here. An alleged successful dog-cat cross. I wasn't sure whether to put this in News or just stick it on the humor thread ... it depends whether it's actually true. I mean, it is in the Daily Mail. In other news, a miraculous image of Darwin has appeared in a tree. See, we told you God was an evo.

Brazilian scientists are sceptical. "A chance é nula por motivos físicos, biolgicos e genéticos. A cpula entre os dois é impossível. Mesmo que tivesse ocorrido, os nmeros dos cromossomos das duas espécies impediriam o nascimento de um animal viável", explica o geneticista e bilogo Adil de Oliveira Pacheco, da Universidade de Passo Fundo. "There's no chance, for reasons physical, biological, and genetic. Sex between the two is impossible. Even if sex took place, the chromosome numbers of the two species would prevent the birth of a living animal", explained the geneticist and biologist Adil de Oliveira Pachec of the University of Passo Fundo. I am slightly surprised to learn that I can read Portugese. Not quite sure about "tivesse", though. "Fertilization", perhaps?

there's a brazillian somewhere here on the board. surprising thing for me too--it mostly makes sense. the spanish that I do know, plus the multiple cognates make it somewhat easy. the first phrase I don't think I could figure out. oh, and there's nosyned too, who's been learning portuguese. maybe he knows (or has a dictionary, or something . . .)

Many years ago, when living in Greensboro, NC, we let our cat out for her daily exploration of the woods behind the apartment. A couple hours later she returned with what we though at first was a kitten. It was wet, messy, ragged, tiny, eyes closed and mewed. And very definitely a dog. She adopted it and nursed it, even though she had no milk. We called the vet and he told us what to do for formula. We worked with him and she raised the puppy just like it was her kitten. Turned out to be a kinda beagle coon dog dachshund poodle cairn jack russell boxer mix.

babelfish translation: Yahoo
quote: "the possibility is null for physical, biological and genetic reasons. Cpula between the two is impossible. Exactly that it had occurred, the numbers of the chromosomes of the two species would hinder the birth of a viable animal ", explain the geneticista and Adil biologist de Oliveira Pacheco, of the University of Passo Fundo.

Exactly that it had occurred
That piece of the text is mistranslated. The correct translation, as pointed out by me in a earlier post, is "Even if it had happened"

That piece of the text is mistranslated. I didn't say it was a good translation. Apparently it doesn't use context to choose between meanings and tends to literal word for word iterations. It is fun to take a paragraph and run it through several tranlations and see what you get. In context "Exactly that it had occurred" does not make sense, so you have to mentally adjust that. (The correct phrase now is "If I had done it ... ") If you have no other resource it can still give you a tentative idea of what was said. So the good news is the Human brain still better. Enjoy.
