same here. and I've grown up flying. i flew before I was four months old, and I've never tired of sitting at the window seat (hopefully well behind the wing or just in front so you can see things) watching down. looking at several layers of clouds, or even a massive thunderhead from above is always amazing.

I'm actually on business right now. I flew to San Fran with only carry on, but on my flight back to Orlando I'm going to have to check my baggage. I just bought a new bottle of cologne and I'm not about to throw it out!

I always try to fly by day and in a window seat. The sheer marvel of looking down on clouds never pales for me.
Yeah, thats understandable, but, you see, you have something to do on the flight. For people who don't, they might as well sleep. I've flown about 20,000 miles since Jan '06, I'm kinda sick of looking at clouds although they do kick-ass!

There really are other things you can do, like think, or talk with the people sitting around you or write or read a book or even play cards.
Well, wait now. You just said no carry-ons. So where do these books and cards come from? As you've described it, airplane activities would be limited to:
1) thumb-twiddling
2) uncomfortable sleep
3) masturbating in the restroom
You may not believe this but it is actually possible to go for eight hours without hearing music, watching tv or talking on the phone.
Most people won't want to, though. The measures you describe would spell the end of the airline travel industry.
Also:
quote:
and if you want to listen to the on plane music, it's cost five bucks to get the headset, 'cause your's most likely won't work unless you've got a hairband, gum, or rubber band).
I just flew to and from Las Vegas last week, on some new Airbus jets, and not only did Frontier provide the headset for free, I discovered that my regular headphones worked just fine in the jack. (And also, weren't crap like the free headphones.) Ever since 747's stopped using those stethoscope "headphones" (where the speaker was actually located in the armrest and the headphones were just rubber tubes), I've never run into an armrest headset jack that wasn't the standard 1/8" miniplug.

Yeah, well, the 9 hours between Chicago and Amsterdam is always overnight when I've done it. Not much to look at there, but since it's usually mid-afternoon to your circadian rhythms, sleep is a challenge, too. (Plus it's better with the jetlag, I've found, to arrive at your destination exhausted and make it to local evening with caffiene.)

Honestly, IIRC there were actually books and magazines on board the planes and I imagine there might be cards as well.

I've flown quite a bit and never ever remeber there being books on board, only those crappy magazines.
Besides.. what if a passenger doesn't like to read? or can't read?
You may enjoy 10 hours with out music but most people I know would not.
and I'm not certain they carry 400 decks of cards on jumbo jets.
Besides, isn't it possible that this 'Foiled plot' is merely a nice little publicity stunt for Mr Blair? He's not been too poular lately.. this could be just what he needs, and just the excuse to push through national identity cards.

On the way to europe they make them overnight. and it does help with the jetlag. it's the way back that's during the day. damn 8 hours of being ahead (colorado--sweden, that is).
you've had better luck with headphones than I have. The ones I flown recently, they now charge 5 bucks (used to be free, like when I was 10-13), and on the international ones they do an evil trick. the end of the jack has to have two prongs in order to work correctly--and they sell those on the plane. The way around is to stick your single prong jack halfway in, and then you have to make sure it says in that positions, and you can use an elastic band of some sort, or gum (like my brother).

Is there honestly any magazine in print right now that it takes you 3 hours to read?
Never seen a book on an airplane, except by accident. Unless the plane had it's own library - a massive waste of tonnage - there's no way that they could stock enough books to make it worthwhile. And what if it was a good book and you wanted to finish it?
Never seen cards. Christ, who plays cards anymore except for gamblers and old farts? How are you supposed to play a card game when you're all sitting right next to each other? The guy in the middle can't keep his hand a secret from his buddies on either side.

I think that the right response is to do away with carry on luggage. Just stop the whole practice of carry on with a few limited exceptions.
No laptops, phones, ipods, pagers carried on.
Actually jar the security people have a much greater chance of picking up dangerous items in carry on luggage than they do in checked luggage unless they change their procedures significantly. Most checked luggage isn't even checked at many airports.
One precaution they do follow is not allowing any checked luggage travelling on a flight that the owner of the baggage isn't actually on.

Everybody is entitled to my opinion.

Lucky you!
Seriously, though, think how much safer we'd be. Can you imagine naked men storming the cabin?
Okay, if you ever lived in a dorm, maybe you can.
