Look before shooting
Also, if you're not sure where each member of your hunting party happens to be at any given moment...you don't pull the trigger. At least that is how I was taught firearm/hunter safety.
Any other hunters out there surprised by the "excuse" given for the accident?
That matches my safety training, Flies. From the news reports I've seen, the VP must have spun and fired before actually seeing what was behind him and without seeing what was behind his target.
Shoot first and look closely later sounds like a Bush-Cheney pattern to me.
My safety instructors would have ended the day's lesson at that kind of mistake; my Army range instructors would have kicked me in the head.

Re: Tort Reform
Maybe down there in good ole Texas, this is a relatively common event, but up here in the North, we frown on shooting members of our own hunting party. Hell, we even frown on shooting members of other, rival, hunting parties .
Ya see, Flies, the guys in Texas have to drive a long way to hunt--it's usually at least a six-pack away.

This is just another way Bush and Chenney are killing old people. Instead of simply taking away their medicare and prescription drugs, they are simply taking them out to the woods and shooting them.
Saves alot of money that way.
Yep. And that's why the big developers lure so many retirees to Florida.
Gators.

Also, some of the birdshot lodged in his heart and caused a heart attack.
And the administration is treating this like a joke?
Yeah, I just saw that report. Wiped the smile off my face.

Re: Didn't break just one rule...
The police were contacted within the hour and did investigate.
The police were turned away at the door and told no assistance was required. They came back the next day to interview Cheney. Is that what's hiding in between your "contacted within the hour" and "did investigate"?
I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on upland bird hunting. From your confusion on what the line is, I'll know to avoid your company.
You might be surprised to know there are folks on this forum who have been hunting for nearly a half century and have never shot a fellow hunter, nor have their friends shot themselves.
Welcome to EvC, Murphy.

Re: The beer
That's his account, Ned. As far as I can tell, he brought it up himself. The hospital spokesman refused to comment and stopped the press conference when reporters asked whether the victim's blood alcohol level was tested.
I agree, though, that a beer at lunch is no problem for hunting three hours later. But I don't trust Cheney nearly as far as I could throw him--he's a dedicated liar, and the refusal to talk to the police makes me suspicious. It's not like Cheney took the guy to the hospital--he stayed at the ranch and sat down to dinner.

Re: Didn't break just one rule...
I wonder what would be said if it had been Slick Willie who had accidently shot someone... of course with him it would never have been an accident... nor would the victim have survived.
I see you have a Clinton thang, Murphy: I always enjoy those. But why do you think hypothetical scenarios involving Clinton are relevant to real events involving Cheney? Clinton has been out of office for more than five years now. Get over it--hate somebody else.
Besides, you won't find a big Clinton fan club here. When you start ranting about Slick Willie in the midst of a discussion about Cheney, it looks like you're just trying to change the subject--which you are.
The point of "sitting down to dinner" is not that Cheney didn't care about his friend, but that he was composed enough and had time enough to eat dinner but couldn't be disturbed to speak to an investigating officer. He says he made no contact with the media or law authorities because his only thought was getting help for his buddy--but that's not what he was doing. He didn't transport the guy to the hospital, he didn't go there later--he just stayed for dinner. Why wouldn't he talk to the police?

Re: Didn't break just one rule...
However, your 'ideal' doesn't fit this situation either as the guy was shot at shoulder height, even though he was in a draw and basically hidden from the party.
Cheney in his one TV interview said the worst moment of his life was when he saw his buddy fall.
By his own admission, Cheney pulled the trigger before he knew what was in his line of fire.

Re: You're just making it worse for Cheney.
Reading your construction of the event leads me more and more to believe that you've never hunted upland birds... unless in one of those shooting gallery huntclub stagings.
They had no dogs.
No stamp. No dogs. No cattle, either.
All hat.

Re: You're just making it worse for Cheney.
You're absolutely right, Murphy.
An early report concluded there were no dogs because the guy who got shot went after his own birds.
But this report says otherwise:
They were up before 8 Saturday and headed out in two groups, with outriders on horseback to flush the birds and about a dozen American pointers and Labrador retrievers.
Cheney sent in his $7 for the stamp after the shooting.
But even with outriders(!} and a dozen dogs, he's still all hat.

Re: You're just making it worse for Cheney.
I dunno, Murphy, but the same story I quoted about the dogs said the guy who got shot did take a dog with him to look for his birds. If I had a dozen dogs, I wouldn't be chasing my own birds, or I'd get some better dogs.
