I don't consider it "wasting my time" so much as "enjoying my time"
I'm currently looking at the best way to transfer ~25 years of 35mm photos (just snapshots - nothing too high quality) to digital format to put them into Myth. Get a good scanner, one where the picture quality is limited by the print and not the scanner. The first image here is a scanned picture of my first kayak - homemade, now about 20 years old and in need of TLC. That is at Beaver Lake on Vancouver Island with my son in front. That kayak weighed 35 lbs and has a lot of miles on it. I now have a new ocean kayak that weighs more but is better suited to open water (and rolling): This is at St Croix island between Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, the oldest NE colony (1604) and where a young Champlain got his start. This picture was taken last year with my digital camera. Enjoy. Hell, I even had one guy stop his car, jump out and want to beat me up! WTF! Try being intentionaly run off the road by a red pickup truck with a white cap on Cadboro Bay Road in Victoria BC ... being cutoff by a car making a right turn just after passing me and then braking hard to make the turn (with a bicycle hanging out of the trunk) ... and again, recently, being run off the road on Water Street here (with a 20 mph speed limit) by a green jeep ... while being yelled at by passengers in both instances. And I have a friend with a steel pin from his hip to his knee from being run off the road by a semi -- and he was on a motorcycle (unfortunately for the semi driver this was observed by a motorcycle policeman ... serendipity in action eh?) It has to do with some people having a completely false sense of the validity of their ignorant opinion of the relative rights of bicycles and other drivers ... in spite of the information being readily available. Join American Wheelmen and (a) learn about defensive riding (quick turns - saved me from hitting the quick turner, making eye contact, position on the road, etc) and (b) become involved in actively promoting bicycle safety awareness. The life you save may be closer to you than you think. This message has been edited by RAZD, 11*24*2005 01:31 AM by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

Note that gourmand (your usage) lies between gourmet (wine, beer tasting) and glutton (excessive consumption).

So people chose to be homosexuals?
My dad has a friend that if he takes one drink he ends up binging. Has no control to stop. Can he learn to take one drink? by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

The choice he makes is to not drink. So he cannot change the behavior, only avoid it altogether?
Most probably don't but some do. I am absolutely certain that some cannot chose to be homosexual. If you can't flick your bic, you can't write with it. by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

You forgot a beginning sequence ...
emptiness 1:1 in the beginning was the beginning of the beginning for before the beginning there was no beginning emptiness 1:2 in the beginning was the beginning of the end for there can be no end without a beginning emptiness 1:3 thus everything was ordained from beginning to end emptiness 1:4 everything that is came after the beginning for it was not there at the beginning emptiness 1:5 we cannot know what was ordained because we were not there emptiness 1:6 thus everything is illusion. by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

My greatest refuge is still the woods. My son is a third generation scout and the first eagle in the family. Winter is my favorite time for camping ... fewer bugs eh? As a Scoutmaster I ran the wilderness adventures and the outdoor and winter "polar bear" campouts and let the other dads manage the cabin camps. I also taught camping, wilderness survival, canoeing, whitewater and cycling merit badges (among others). As a scout I was more interested in being out in the woods and camping than in getting merit badges, and that probably explains why I never made it past 1st class but learned a lot about camping. Our troop in Ann Arbor used some old wooded land that was owned by the university for camping and we had a patrol campsite that was near a redtail hawk nest. We could bike out and camp overnight without any adults in those days. I figure it is about where the Naval Architecture building is in North campus now ... (sigh). I used to have an indian style fire starter so I wouldn't have to use matches. I became a birder taking J for walks when he was 1+ to the local pond to see the "duts" and then going home to look up what we saw. This was in Victoria BC, so there was a lot of variety through the year. At 2 he could identify about 50 birds at a glance, and he has shown me several I would not have seen otherwise. One was a painted redstart. When we move to a new place the first thing we look for are places to go to get into the woods and "away". Current place is on a bike trail (less than 5 miles to work) and close to an audobon center with some other non-developable land around. It's also on the coast so I can get in the kayak and go. Oh, and the house here is older than the constitution. The streets were named after Jefferson and Washington while they were still alive (though as far as I know Washington did not sleep here). We get lots of parades go by the door for all kinds of occasions, usually involving a colonial theme of some kind. by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

My problem is that all my feeders are still in Michigan ... with the unsold house, and that I am renting at the moment in a charming old house (how old is it? older than the constitution) with no yard, and I can likely count more birds without a feeder than with one -- does that count in the program?
I did a bio-blitz earlier this year, and while I had a respectable number of birds I didn't add to the total count because there was so much duplication (sigh - ya keep hopin for the rare sighting when it can count the most eh?). I would hope to see redpols like we had in Maine the year we lived there, but expect I'd have to be in a more country area. I do get a lot of sea birds though. Hoodies and Buffleheads and Brants on the bay this morning. I have given some thought to checking out the local troop in my town. But I have to admit, having no children makes me a bit leery of what others may think or accusations that could get started. There are several options Merit Badge councilor is an easy one. Many districts need Unit Commissioners - who's goal is allowing Troops to succeed, by ensuring that they maximize their resources. You work with the troop committee to ensure good training and that the policies of the BSA are properly followed, you work with the Scoutmaster to ensure that a proper environment is provided for the Scouts to achieve what they want to achieve and that proper adult safeguards are in place (2 deep leadership etc). Further up the pecking order are District Commissioners and such. Still volunteer positions. These can get involved in things like planning district jamborees and the like. Also look into Woodbadge training. This is a newly revamped (broadened) program that will teach you a lot and renew a lot of old information, and it will also get you into the Woodbadge Association where you get to sing some silly songs and stuff ("I used to be a bear ...") Trust me, when they see that Eagle Scout ribbon on your uniform ... {{steps down from ADC podium .... a position left vacant when I moved btw ... in the GR Ford Council ... which I believe includes your neck of the woods...}}
I think that currently there are a lot of negative connotations regarding Scouting. Yes. It seems that calling someone a "boyscout" is an insult, a goody two-shoes who will treat you too honestly? Image is everything it seems, especially to the target audience. You gotta wonder who some people would prefer to meet in a back alley on a dark and stormy night with a broken down car.
