What is music?
I really admire musicians, whether it be heavy metal, easy listining, even bluegrass. Truely timeless music has so much soul in it, you cannot help but be moved.
Dr. Platte of Taylor University Fort Wayne Branch (Formerly Fort Wayne Bible College) described music as "An expression of something deeper within," a favorite of what his students called "Plattitudes." Musicians, True Musicians, put so much of themselves into their music that it's amazing they have anything left for themselves.
That ability is true for other artits as well.

Re: A Distinct Lack Thereof
There is nothing wrong with that, When I am driving, I find that music takes my mind of everything, I can think more profoundly with just silence. Music is a great distraction, but sometimes you just need to think.

Some of their stuff is really out there, but some, like the single Born Too Slow, is irresistible. Same goes for Cake (favorite single: Short Skirt, Long Jacket).
When I want rock, I find myself turning more and more often to the White Stripes. The latest album, 'Get Behind Me Satan', is yet another masterpiece. It's rather a departure for Jack and Meg, featuring a much wider range of instrumentation than anything heretofore. A couple of tracks I just can't quit listening to: I'm Lonely and Little Ghost.
Lately I've been getting into standards from artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Stars Fell On Alabama is irresistible, but I also like Ella's Sweet Georgia Brown and Louis' A Kiss To Build A Dream On.
In classical, I'm not much on the 12-tone stuff, but I can never get enough Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert (I think I want the 4th movement of the Trout Quintet, or maybe The Shepherd On The Rock played at my funeral) or Rachmaninoff, to name a few.
I kinda like some opera, like La Traviata. Has anyone ever seen the movie version from the mid 80s? Lovely!

Another plug for The White Stripes
I just can't get enough of the latest album 'Get Behind Me Satan'.
The Stripes are known for using circa-1968 16-track recording equipment. Their albums are released on vinyl as well as CD, and some of the singles are available in the old 45rpm format. Oddly, although their music is traditional blues-influenced hard rock, Jack and Meg have had the vast bulk of their success in the alternative format, often seeing their singles go to number one and stay there for weeks.
Anyone who remembers and loves early Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Jefferson Airplane or Jimi Hendrix but who hasn't heard of the Stripes should run not walk to the nearest record store and buy several discs. You won't believe what you'll hear!
Is there anyone else at this forum who's heard this latest record? I think it might be their best yet. The current single is My Doorbell featuring Jack on piano. My favorite track is I'm Lonely (But I'm Not That Lonely Yet).

I agree with berberry, White Stripes are well worth a listen.
a few of my personal faves:
They Might Be Giants - quirky, unusual and very catchy
Belle and Sebastian - also quirky and catchy
Daft Punk - quality electronica
Beth Orton - lovely voice
New Order - awesome (somebody already mentioned Joy Division )

On the 7th day, God was arrested.
