Author | Topic: Why read the Bible literally? | |||||||||||||||||||||||

I would like to expand on the beliefs of C.S. Lewis. My signature is taken from Lewis, his Narnia series. In the final book he addresses a subject that seems to come up quite often here, "Who can be saved". In it he clearly says that profession of belief is NOT the determining factor and that even Non-Believers, even folk actively working for some other God, will be saved.

Although I am a little late to the dance, I have to say that Crash has a real point in his comment. What I believe he is trying to say is that if you take the stance that a document is literally true before you read it then you can make any document true. The Koran is literally true. Moby Dick is literally true. The Kent Family Chronicles is literally true. What makes the Bible stand apart from these others? This can be addressed in Validity of Written Documents if you are so inclined.
The questions are: What is lost if the Flood story is not taken literally? Does this nullify the value of Christ's sacrifice?

To move on to the other topic, as I said, I have given up trying to determine what is true about anything. Clearly, you haven't. You've simply decided to jump to whatever conclusions you like best, because actual thinking and inquiry is simply too hard for you. You haven't abandoned a desire for truth at all, Faith. You've simply abandonded any defensible means of obtaining it.
I think they're solid proof; they stand as evidence to my mind What I'm trying to do, if you'd read in context, is understand why this is so. To all intents and purposes you seem a bright and reasonable person - unless the subject is God, then reason and logic go right out the window.

Apologize for your personal comments. You are to address the argument not the person. I got suspended for making personal comments about you.

Apologize for your personal comments. I sincerely apologize for referring to you as "bright and reasonable". It was not my intent to offend you.

I will not discuss anything with you until you apologize properly. And yes, telling me I'm bright and reasonable is offensive too, as well as your smartaleck rejoinder about this. You have no right to judge anything whatever about me personally.

I will not discuss anything with you until you apologize properly. For what? Seriously, the only personal comment I made about you was that you seemed bright and reasonable. Jesus christ. Kill me for being nice, I guess. Oh, well. Just your latest dodge to avoid discussion.
You have no right to judge anything whatever about me personally. That's never stopped you before:

Figure it out. You commented on me personally in more ways than one -- most of that post was a personal comment. Compliments from you are equally unwelcome. It is not your place to pass judgment on ANY personal characteristic of mine.
I still agree with what I wrote about you. {EDIT: in fact your rudeness to me now is an example of your disrespect}. But I was suspended for what I said. You should likewise be suspended for your personal comments unless you acknowledge that you are in the wrong. This message has been edited by Faith, 06-22-2005 06:52 PM

Crashfrog,
Talk about embarrassing Satan and his atheists. How can one seriously refute another about his/her deity when atheists are commanded to deny deity? Methinks, Satan would have an atheist respond more logically and subtly, like: What cosmic logic, I don’t see any logic? What cosmic order, I don’t see any order? What non-chaotic events, its all randomness to me? What redeeming events, redeeming events don’t exist? What brotherly love, charity, benevolence, etc. What prophecy ever fulfilled? In sum, atheism is mere dogmatic hype. Truly atheism is perhaps the most illogical hype out there; few here play that game. Also, accusing and insulting folks is a fine art these days. Terrorism and bashing fails to avail. Compassion is in order. Philip

It is not your place to pass judgment on ANY personal characteristic of mine. But, apparently, it is your place to pass judgement on all the rest of us. How about you drop the sickening double standard and entirely invented and ficticious charges and answer the question, if you can?

It is not your place to pass judgment on ANY personal characteristic of mine. ====== But, apparently, it is your place to pass judgement on all the rest of us. I've been suspended for doing so and if I do it again I will again accept the consequences.
How about you drop the sickening double standard and entirely invented and ficticious charges and answer the question, if you can? How about you face that you owe me a sincere apology or deserve to be suspended? This kind of thing has been permitted way too much around here. I'm not taking it any more.

Very Christian, Phillip. I'm sure your god is proud. And there is another low personal slam for which you deserve to be suspended. Unless you sincerely apologize.
