Animals seemed to be the last thing on most minds in this standing room only meeting of the Tulsa Parks Board, even though they were battling over the zoo. At issue is Dan Hicks' proposal to add a creationism exhibit.
But, opponents, including fellow Christians, argued there's a difference between religion and culture.

How do you feel? Is there a clear difference between religion and culture. Can cultural exhibits live in harmony in mainly scientific institutions such as zoos and at the same time not allow "religious" exhibits?

The problem is that one of the missions of most zoos is to serve as an educational institution. That means a zoo has the duty of disseminating scientific knowledge as accurately as is possible in light of its other missions. Since creationism is nonsense, a zoo has the duty not to have an exhibit on creationism except, in light of contemporary politics, to show how it fails as science.
As far a culture is concerned, I don't see how the statue of Ganesh promotes Hinduism. If someone wants a picture of Noah's Ark (with no promotional materials) in addition to this statue, then I would have no objections.

Well, as a Christian, IMHO the Classic Creationist idiom is pure nonsense and crap. What's needed is more public derision and ridicule whenever someone brings the subject up. Dan Hicks should simply be laughed at for making a fool of himself.

I meant, certainly you can have cultural exhibits in scientific arenas without them trying to convert you. In any museum of history there is plenty of information about historic belief, religion etc. however in the scientific setting it can be seen in the historical light.

Topic bypassed PNT process
Thread moved here from the Coffee House forum.
This topic bypassed the "Proposed New Topics" procedure. Let's NOT make a habit of doing such.
Had it been put into the "PNT", I suspect it would have gotten prompt advancement to an open debate forum.
