While we may be glad that modern Christianity is less violent than it has been in the past there is still the risk of violence when the churches come into conflict.
In this case it is the various churches' rights over the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
Father Athanasius states:
"... I refused to close the door to our chapel and then the Greeks, priests and deacons and acolytes attacked the Israeli police standing by the door and I was pushed away and fell down, and someone was kicking me, and more police arrived..."
and
"I'm really scared someone's going to get killed."
The author of the article writes:
While I was in Jerusalem investigating the contribution the world's Christian powers have made to the world's most intractable conflict, I witnessed two major fights between churchmen and many minor ones.
The second incident, in July that year, landed 11 monks in hospital. The argument was over whether or not an elderly Egyptian monk should be permitted to sit under a eucalyptus tree on the Ethiopians' roof terrace.
And these are the mainstream, moderate churches.

I can't believe that those guys carried on like that! This gets us back into the debate and discussion on What defines a True Christian? I have always thought that getting hung up on a building or a piece of "sacred" ground was a bit idolatrous but then I never understood icons, either. The thing is, these guys reflect Christianity to the media, as does Benny Hinn, as do fake televangelists. So too do I. It makes me realize that on behalf of my faith, I always need to maintain a dignified public as well as private image. My friends know that I am nuts, however!
I can begin to see why many of you guys prefer rational logical naturalistic world views as opposed to religious ones.

play nice....
It’s like children. If they can’t learn to play nice and share their toys you should take it from then till they can.
Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind..

Don't be too hard on us Theists folks.....
....as we are just a subset of humanity.
Sadly, events like the ones mentioned in this thread indicate this only too clearly.
Regardless of the ideal of any philosophy, ideology or religion - which in itself may be most laudable - they are all subject to the (possibly corruptive) interpretation of groups/individuals.
Yes Christians do act badly - but that's more a reflection on human nature than on Christianity itself.
What do you think folks?

I think that many Christians need reminding of this fact. Some in particular are all too willing to make similar attacks on other groups as an argument for the superiority of Christianity.

Only Human
It has always been my opinion that we are all humans, Atheists, Christians, Muslims, or Buddhists. So as Humans we all make mistakes, we all have our flaws. There are idiots and assholes in all walks of life. To me people shouldn't be classified by their Religion, but rather by their actions.

We have a winner!
IMHO one of the most Christian sites on the Inernet is Landover Baptist. Of all the Christian Sites out in WWWland I believe it is the one I think Jesus would most approve of. It is a mirror, a reflection, a reminder.
We can readily see right here on EvC the trend of saying that those who behave inappropriately are not REAL Christians. Bull. The history of Christianity is filled with major players who behaved terribly. It would be hard to find a bigger bigot than Martin Luther. It would be hard to find a better example of intolerance than King James.
But such traits are common to almost every group. The big issue IMHO is for Christians to acknowledge such faults and try to work to see that they are not repeated ad infinitum.
