So why do you think they reject evolution?
The mentality of evolution, "only the strong survive", "kill or be killed" is sort of disturbing.
Of course for humans it's turned into something different. Do good in school, become popular, get the girl, etc...
A harsh way of seeing it, don't you think?

The subtlety of nature is far beyond that of sense or of the understanding; so that the specious meditations, speculations, and theories of mankind are but a kind of insanity, only there is no one to stand by and observe it.

if evolution can even be said to have a "mentality."
Mentality given off through evolutionary thinking. Oops, what I meant to have said.
quote:
That the hard work of competition is the only way to achieve real reward? What's harsh about that? Isn't that the sort of rugged, can-do individualism that's so quintessentially American?
Competition only lessens one's self-esteem. Or within capitalism provides a decent economy. Who said America was so great? The whole american dream thing is a tradgedy, making people not think of what matters, rather on the worldly materialistic desires of this man made monster. Man needs to find himself, not sit at home with the securities of shelter and family.
quote:
The alternative is the "everybody wins all the time, you get everything for free" mentality that religious conservatives find so repellant and "liberal." To the degree that evolution suggests that hard work is necessary for survival and gain, I would think that religious conservatives would be behind it. Except for the whole "contradicts the Bible" thing.
Your missing it man...

Ok, "The Best Survives"
Best meaning most able for survival. Coming out on top. Donald Trump, Bill Gates for example.

Death of an individual becomes opportunity and sustenance for another.
Do you think there is more to life than that? Can't you see there is more than that within yourself?

You don't think that is what it comes down to?
There was an "etc..." there for a reason. That might work for Highschool at least.

I don't know about you but I do not think one needs to be a Bill Gates or Donald Trump to successfully live out a life.Evolution only requires that you live long enough to reproduce after which your offspring need do the same. With the structure of todays society many survive that never would have.
But both are a choice, and at the end is the end.No one gets out alive. So make your choice.
Great Post.
But in the end, is there really a point to the "meaningful life" by evolutionary standards?
Reproduction is key, survival.
