Shraff - we don't doubt your abilities to overcome hardships. But I think what Phathead () is saying is that he HAS experienced something and that he says this is God.
I know that you are trying to say "it ain't God" but that would be unfair on Phatboy because he says it is. Likewise - your story is also fine. But get back to the truth!

Not free time on their hands...free time in their heads.

Weeeelll, I think he also said that MY experience was of God as well.
All I am saying is that I didn't experience anything like what people who say God intervened, helped them, etc. say they felt so that they "just knew" that God was responsible.

Nope.
I'm saying that I don't know if it was God or not, and that nobody has told me how to tell if it was if it doesn't already require belief.

Restatement of purpose
Just to get this thread back on track (the Belief...a choice? thread spurred my memory), I would like to restate my original inquiry in a less confused form.
If we assume that belief is something that cannot be controlled,* why would a loving God require it for salvation, as many evangelicals preach?
*If you wish to argue that it can be, the above thread would seem to be a more appropriate place - I'll be watching both and you could simply reference it if need be.
