I was asked by a friend to bring this to the attention of the good posters here...
Petition to adopt the AAAS benchmark in Georgia high schools
I hope this isn't considered spam, but I thought it needs support.

Cobb County, Georgia
I think all the existing "Cobb County" stories have been closed, so I put this tidbit here.
Judge sends evolution lawsuit to trial - Dated 4/6/2004
quote:
ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- A federal judge refused to dismiss a lawsuit against a school district's practice of posting disclaimers inside science textbooks saying evolution is "a theory, not a fact."
More at the above cited.

I would die before I ever move to such a backward state as Georgia or Tennessee.

Tennessee bound....give me six months
Hmmm, guess I'm fried .... Wait, on the Creo side I suppose I should be happy then? Although I'm not a hard core creo (I'm open to evolution and I don't think it contradicts religion.) Are the southern states really that much different then the northern ones? Or are just certain states more religiously inclined and not whole geographic areas?

If this state wasn't considered backwords by a lot of the people here, I would take offense to that. But as it is backwards, I don't. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff I've heard comefrom fundamentalists.

I realize this is a rather old thread but I thought I'd offer the latest:
Arguments Conclude in Evolution Sticker Trial
What I find most interesting is the actual words on the sticker; "This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully and critically considered. [emphasis added]"
It seens that the members of the school board need a little education about evolution, themselves...
{Edited to change disagreeing subject/verb clause that was particularly bothering me for some reason.}

I am not surprised at all. A few years back a 19 year old christian fundy and extreme creo got on the board of education in Normal, IL. Can't remember his name off the top of my head now, but I know some reputable people who knew him personally and they told me that this guy didn't know squat about anything except the christian fundy interpretation of the bible. The reason he was voted in was because he was preaching things like we need to put morals back into the classroom and all the other nonsense that had nothing to do with education. Coincidently, Normal is a very conservative town.

Hate world.
Revenge soon!

We call it the Bible Belt for a reason.
It's different there, make no mistake.
A former employer told me that when she was an apprentice to a famous animal trainer in the south, perfect strangers used to frequently ask her why she wasn't married.
She was only 22 years old.

She was only 22 years old.
Well, if she was already 22 that seems a reasonable question. It's unlikely that all her cousins were married even if her brothers were already taken.

Re: Tennessee bound....give me six months
Wow, hadn't been here in almost six months and was a little surprised to get a response.... Masters studies has a way of eating time
I am actually now living in Tennessee, and even as a Christian I've found this incredibly foreign. 23 and haven't been asked why I'm not married, at least not yet.
It's weird, where I'm from originally, most people want nothing to do with Christianity. Here it seems like if your not specifically something else, your a Christian. It's really weird how culturally ingrained it seems to be.
Honestly, I prefer the semi-hostile culture back home to the shallow Christianity that is often down here. At least other Christians back home didn't accuse me of being a heretic because I don't react the way they think a Christian should. (I don't cry at the alter every church service). Always been a bit of a theological oddity.
Oh well, I'm only here for school anyway.....
