Proposed for the "Dates and Dating" forum.
Extracted from Whatever's message at the "Which religion's creation story should be taught?" topic.
quote:
However your theory rest upon the unscientific premise that the fossils are the same age as the rocks.
It seems most straight forward, that the organisms were living on or near the surface of the sediments at the time the sediments were being deposited. The age of the organisms (now fossils) are the same as the age of the sediments (now rock).

The only other possibility is weathering fossils out of another rock and redepositing.
However, I'd like to hear Whatever explain why it's unscientific.

Hasn't it occured to anyone that even if we toss out the fossils and only look at the rocks that it would still contradict the YEC's position?

Re: whatever will have a problem doing that
The quoted in message 1 so threw me that I had to break down and start a topic over it.
The quoted from message 75 of the "Which religion's..." topic made "However your theory rest upon the unscientific premise that the fossils are the same age as the rocks." seem enlightened.
Just pissed me off, to be reminded that I blew 4+ years of my life to get a degree in something that wasn't even a real science.

technically, fossils can vary a little in age from the surrounding rock.
as some mentioned, if the fossil is made of material harder than the surrounding rock, the rock can erode away, and re-sediment.
the rock can also form a cast which goes unfilled for sometime (but not long enough to be significant.
the important point to note is that the animal or plant that has fossilized it ALWAYS slightly younger than the rock, obviously. the fossil can easily be said to be the same age within a cerain variance without any form of doubt in any paleontologists' minds.

Re: whatever will have a problem doing that
I know how you feel. I always get pissed, too, when people bad mouth my chosen field.
I know it's borne out of the sheer frustration YECs feel because they just cannot combat the geologic record... but that doesn't help my mood much.

Whatever induced Moose psychosis
While I'm not condemning AdminNosy for promoting this topic, I have decided that it probably should be declared a "Short Subject" type topic.
Going to shut it down soon.
