From the Human Rights Campaign:
What's happening: this week on Thursday September 30, the United States House of Representatives will vote on the Marriage Protection Amendment (formerly the Federal Marriage Amendment). It's critical that we get as many calls into congressional offices now in order to demonstrate STRONG opposition to any effort to change the constitution.
Call the HRC Action Line at 1-866-698-1010. You will be prompted to enter your ZIP code.
Keep these talking points in front of you when you make the call. Tell your Representative:
You oppose the Marriage Protection Amendment, and you urge him/her to oppose this legislation - and ANY amendment to the Constitution on marriage;
This amendment would write discrimination into the Constitution - constitutional amendments have historically been about protecting and expanding rights, not about discrimination
Ask how your Representative will vote on the MPA
Then please tell us if they said how the Representative will vote. Just drop us a line at field@hrc.org to let us know. This is important - it will tell us how to focus our efforts during these last three critical days.
The HRC Action Line will only be active from now until Thursday - so please call 1-866-698-1010 today!

i heard the amendment says nothing about gay marriage but seeks to remove judicial review.
do you know if this is true?

I guess there is that side of it also. Either way, it's a bad thing.

For goodness's sake, please vote Democrat this November!
Why? Bush is a right wing nutcase.

It's over, thank goodness. 227-186. The Amendment required 290 votes to move onward to the Senate.

Well maybe the calls helped but I'd like to think the sheer stupidity of the bill did it in.

Bah, this bill is critical if we want to stop activist judges from overreaching. If we don't, for all we know, "Separate But Equal" might even get overturned as unconstitutional.

I still don't understand why people support Bush even though this is clear evidence that he's trying to undermine the constitution and our justice system. Without judicial review, the republicans could actually follow the rat's plan and rid the world of the "infidels" through some unimaginable way. I guess people won't miss their freedom until it's actually taken away from them.

i guess i'll reply before it's closed.
what gets me the most is that we're willing to give up our freedom for security against the people we're always being told are attacking what again? our freedom.
does that make sense to anyone?
if they're attacking freedom, protect the freedoms we have: judicial review being the major thing protecting them. you don't win a war on terror by terrorizing the terrorists because the whole country is in a panic over it. they want to scare us: that's the definition of terrorism.
if we want to win, rebuild the world trade center EXACTLY like it was only safer, and go on with the american way of life, ignoring them.
