The molecules of life are much different than the molecules of non living material. Could you imagine teaching to a bunch of high schoolers that theres no difference between them and a rock?
This is technically true. However, a rock's molecular structure is as different to a sheet of metal as it is to a cell. By your logic, a sheet of metal must me somehow special.

I'm not saying that at all. There's definitely a difference between me and a rock. What I'm saying is the difference between me and a rock is essentially the same as the difference between a rock and a sheet of metal. In other words, there's nothing "special" or "godly" about me anymore than a rock, a sheet of metal, a diamond, etc...

Re: Do non-living systems
Depends on what you mean by waste. The Sun can be viewed as a big... huge nuclear reactor. The system gives off radiation into space. Would you define the radiation as waste?

Well, not really. Physically, yes. However, I have a consciousness that makes me a person. I have a survival instinct that tells me I'm going to sacrifice that rock if I have to to survive.
By the way, don't even try to move the goal post by starting to argue that we're special because we have a consciousness and all of that. The original topic was the borderline difference between life and non-life. In other words, it would be more fair if we are comparing a single celled bacterium and piece of rock.

We're moving a little bit into the philosophy sector, but oh well. No, I don't feel that a bacterium do not have a consciousness. I know this.

Re: Do non-living systems
Yes, but all living things are made up of either eukaryotic or prokaryotic cells.
