Well, it's quite simple. Myoldest sister is number 2, her younger brother is number 3, his younger sister is number 4, her younger brother is number 5, and his younger brother (me) is number six.
The reason I have to call everybody by his/her number is because in our culture younger people aren't suppose to say the names of older ones. I think this is a bad idea, because I'm 21 and I don't have a clue what my aunts' and uncles' names are. I only know them by their numbers. It's easy to remember up to 6, but it's awfully hard when you have to go up to 15 or 20. Anyway, I've been trying to teach the little kids my name everytime I see them now. Don't want them to not know my name when they are older. This message has been edited by Lam, 07-20-2004 01:22 PM The Laminator

Sounds like Charlie Chan. Is this a matter of respect or an acknowledgement of authority?

It's suppose to be both, although I fail to see how being a number is a sign of authority or being respected.
I guess I've been influenced by you westerners too much. The Laminator

Number one son never seemed too thrilled about it either.

Just out of curiousity, which country are you from specifically? I've never heard of that system. It's quite interesting. I just hope it never catches on...sounds like an evil plan hatched by AI to advance the day of our assimilation/destruction, if you ask me. Lam IS a prophet, after all! Heh, j/k. Lam is probably gonna hurt me pretty soon if I keep this prophet mess up .

I'm from Viet Nam. However, there are different cultures within this country. Mine is, unfortunately, unique in that numbers are assigned to individuals because they are respected.

I know! How would you like it if your brother starts calling you "2" or "3"? How would you like it if your nephew calls you "3" or "4"? I'm the only one in my family who is uncomfortable of being a number. However, everytime that I complain, my parents always say, "you should be glad now that you are not the only one that isn't called by a number." I mean, how is it a good thing that I'm a number? I have a name, and I am damn proud of that name... even though it's kinda girlish if you ask me. Anyway, I'll probably never understand it as much as my parents. The Laminator

And THAT Sir, is the biggest load of steaming S***T I've ever seen. I can call you out right NOW on being a freak of nature because of your lack of sensitivity relative to your fellow human beings..you're like some kind of barbarian ape that throws it's own poop to make a point. Your like a jerk or something...maybe one day, you can create like a super white race that can kill off all the people that don't think like you do...wait a minute...thats been tried before. You opened this thread and made your controversial point. Now you can't stand that someone has the courage to counter your looser point. I see you apologized, but in the mean time, don't forget you are the one who laid out this controversial point. Maybe if you can't stand refutes, you should think twice before opening up to debate what you know darn well is a debatable subject. Now if you had any character atol you'd do another apology.

Refute my factual statements substantiated by nature and science. Name calling and insults don't cut it. You admitted this thread was a mistake. Now you're insulting me to cover your own stupidity.

My message is, I didn't choose to be a white hetero, any more than you chose to be a gay asian.
