Additionally, here is some evidence as to why one might not want to engage in anal sex. (looks like I was mistaken about gay men not being affected by HPV) Possibility to transfer an STD is evidence to not engage in a particular form of sex? We better put a halt to all forms of sex. Goodbye species...

No. That comment was intended to be glib.

Sorry for the misread... perhaps I am confused on your stance.
In your mind is anal sex "unnatural", "immoral", neither, or both? What about the same question for oral sex?

I don't think either anal or oral sex is unnatural or immoral.
Your confusion is understandable though as I have been arguing against the claim that one of the functions of the anus is for sex. I think that argument is off the mark and an unnecessary argument that smacks of being contrary for the sake of being contrary. This message has been edited by custard, 06-18-2004 12:25 PM

Only if you're not making a distinction between "function" and "purpose".
For instance, I have a crate in my living room that functions very well as a chair. In fact, in no longer functions as a crate, in any capacity. That crate's sole function is now chair, simply because I've chosen to use it that way. And that crate doesn't even have a great big thumping nerve cluster up inside it that strongly encourages sitting on it like a chair. And tell my mama I'm a hundred years late; I'm over the rails and out of the race The crippled psalms of an age that won't thaw are ringing in my ears" -Beck

What does it matter what the anus was designed for? The fact is having sex with it does work. Someone already pointed out that the mouth wasn't designed for oral sex, but that doesn't mean it can't perform oral sex nor that many people can't enjoy using it for that purpose.
Our heads weren't designed for punching balls, but soccer players use their heads for that purpose every day. Our arms weren't designed for walking but some gymnasts like to use them for walking. I don't see the point in this line of argument.

Function, purpose, I was trying to avoid semantics.
The anus is not a genital. It's purpose is not to have sex, it is to help excrete waste as part of the digestive system. The fact that it is pleasurable to stimulate the anus does not change its purpose as part of the digestive system. Some people can achieve orgasm from being excreted upon or vomited upon, does that make the skin of their chests and faces genitals? Does it now mean the purpose of your face is to be excreted upon for sexual pleasure? No it does not. I think it is a specious and unnecessary argument to claim the anus to be considered to have a sexual function/purpose in order to substantiate the claim that anal sex is 'natural.' Who cares if the purpose of your mouth is to speak, chew food, and begin the digestion process? That doesn't mean it's 'unnatural' to use it for sex.

custard - Thanks for the clarification... I wouldn't have been so argumentative if I had known...

ha ha, that was my point: it's irrelevant to the argument about the bible and homosexuality.

Function, purpose, I was trying to avoid semantics. Eh. I like semantics.
does that make the skin of their chests and faces genitals? Dude, if you don't think the skin of your partner's chest and face should be treated in a genital-like fashion, I severely pity them. But seriously, this leads me to an interesting idea... breasts. By the standards your using for the anus, breasts do not have a sexual purpose. They have a clear purpose of their own, and that's lactating. Sure, they happen to have a lot of nerves close together, which can be used for stimulation, but that doesn't mean they have a sexual purpose. But... duh. Breasts so have a sexual purpose. They provide stimulation for both parties, which is the primary requirement for sex. So why the double standard for the anus? And breasts lead me on to a bigger idea... (they always do...) I think we can agree that the purpose of nerve endings all over the body is to provide pleasure/pain impulses to the brain, right? I mean... that's not a vastly contraversial idea, I think. So, given that nerves have the purpose of providing pleasure, (at its most extreme, sexual pleasure) wouldn't any given area of the body be considered as having a sexual purpose? Does it make the whole body one big genital? Well, obviously no. But only because "genital" is a specific word used to describe a specific organ. Breasts aren't genitals either, but they sure have sexual purpose. Saying there's anything on the body that doesn't have a potential sexual purpose is like saying the clitoris doesn't have a sexual purpose. Heck, all it does is send pleasure impulses to the brain. In what twisted bizarro world is that a sexual purpose? [EDITED TO ADD: I rambled a bit in this post, I know. I was just sorta writing as things occurred to me.] This message has been edited by Dan Carroll, 06-18-2004 01:10 PM "Egos drone and pose alone, Like black balloons, all banged and blown On a backwards river the infidels shiver in the stench of belief. I like to have my ears nibbled on. Is that aural sex?

But... duh. Breasts so have a sexual purpose. Why? Because it turns you on to look at breasts? Some people are into feet, does that give them a sexual purpose? Is that why your feet exist? For the purpose of sex? Look, just because you can have sex with something, or get turned on by looking at it, doesn't mean that is the function of that particular body part. You endeavor to expand the meaning of the word "function."
quote: (FYI I used definition six because it specifically pertains to body parts). So the physiological activity of breasts, or feet, or the face is for sex? No, but I'm not arguing you can't be aroused by them or stimulate them.
So why the double standard for the anus? I think I have typed the word 'anus' more in the last few hours than I have in the past year. I'm finished discussing the anus.
wouldn't any given area of the body be considered as having a sexual purpose? If you want to argue that simply because something can be erogenous it has a sexual purpose I'm not going to dispute it. Following that line of thinking, yes, every part of the body that when stimulated provides pleasure could have a sexual purpose.

So the physiological activity of breasts, or feet, or the face is for sex? No, but I'm not arguing you can't be aroused by them or stimulate them. Honestly, I fail to see the distinction here. Once again, I have to bring up the clitoris. (Okay, I don't have to, I just like to.) All it does is provide stimulation. Would that count? If so, why wouldn't the breasts or anus, which provide that function and more, count?
